Nice and Vence were far from the front, yet daily life was marked by rationing, scarcity and uncertainty. Paris was occupied; many modernist artists were forced into exile, hiding or silence, while the center of the art world slowly shifted from Paris to New York.In Vence, the aging and recovering Henri Matisse turned to scissors instead of brushes. Assistants painted sheets of paper in pure colors, and Matisse cut them into figures, plants, stars and circus performers. This became his celebrated “drawing with scissors.” Begun in 1943 and published in 1947, Jazz transformed cut paper, color, rhythm and improvisation into something like a silent form of music.This album follows the circus spirit of Jazz, with six tracks inspired by six traditional circus acts: The Clown, The Juggler, The Tightrope, The Flying Trapeze, The Knife Thrower, and The Ringmaster.The Clown, the opening piece, is not simply a comic character. It imagines Matisse in Vence in 1943—an aging artist working within a fragile body and a shrinking world.
