Acts 11:1-26 Ewen Lin

from Grace Community · host Isaac Moran

Home Group questions:Peter was criticised for eating with Gentiles because it was against the Jewish law. How can we sometimes feel pressure from our fellow believers not to associate with certain people? In what ways could we be guilty of making the same judgements? How should we handle being the receiver or the giver of such criticism?Verses 19-20 say that when the Jewish Christians were scattered after the persecution, some believers spoke only to Jews, while others also went to the Greeks (Hellenists). Why are there some people whom Christians may be hesitant to evangelise? Discuss their motivation for preaching Jesus even though they knew of Stephen's death and risked persecution. Does this challenge you? Why or why not?According to verses 19-21, who were the ones doing the evangelising, and what does this teach us about the mission of all believers, not just the "specialists"? According to verse 21, why did the church grow, and how might this encourage you in evangelism?Verses 23-26 tell us that Barnabas encouraged the believers to remain faithful to the Lord with steadfast purpose (v.23). He then went to get Saul so that they could teach the church together. What does this teach us about the relationship between justification (placing our faith in Jesus) and sanctification (becoming more like Jesus)? How should this shape the way we welcome new believers, especially those with no church background, into the church?Prayer: This would be a good time to pray for our individual evangelism, for the outreach of the church, and for individuals we would like to reach with the gospel. Pray for opportunities to proclaim the gospel and for the boldness to do so.
