TaoYuanMing loved singly the chrysanthemum; Since the time of Tang, all have exalted the peony. Yet I only adore the lotus, the water lily.Borne from mud yet it does not soil; Bathed in shallow water, yet coquettish it remains not; Hollow inside, upright outside. It does not branch out, but stays close to its stem; The farther, the clearer its aroma becomes. Its stalk stands tall and straight, To behold from afar, yet not to be toyed with.I should think: The chrysanthemum is the hermit of the flowers. The peony is the rich. The lotus, a gentleman of integrity. And yet--Few think of chrysanthemum after Sir Tao&`&s time, and who shares my love upon the water lily? But doted on by the masses is the peony flower!
