Jeremy Au and Adriel Yong, Head of Investments at Ascend Network, explored the rise of AI companions as a "solution" to loneliness. Cheap, instant, hyper-personalized AI interactions full of acceptance will increasingly compete and substitute for the time-expense, imperfections and conflicts inherent in real-life human relationships. Reflecting on their own experiences with digital connections from gaming platforms like MapleStory and Utopia, they debated whether AI companions alleviate loneliness or deepen it by substituting authentic human connections. Drawing parallels to the processed food industry’s impact on nutrition, they questioned whether AI companions could commodify human interaction. Jeremy highlighted parenting challenges, exploring the potential for AI to act as surrogate caregivers and its implications for children’s development.
