Alberto Manguel nasceu em Buenos Aires em 1948, e cresceu em Telavive e na Argentina. Aos 16 anos, trabalhava na livraria Pygmalion, em Buenos Aires, quando Jorge Luis Borges lhe pediu que lesse para ele em sua casa. Foi leitor de Borges entre 1964 e 1968, ano em que se mudou para a Europa. Viveu em vários países, entre os quais Espanha, França, Itália e Inglaterra. É ensaísta, romancista premiado e autor de vários best‑sellers internacionais, como "Dicionário de Lugares Imaginários", "Uma História da Curiosidade", "A Biblioteca à Noite" ou "Para uma História da Leitura". Escritor e bibliófilo, foi director da Biblioteca Nacional da Argentina entre 2016 e 2018. Em 2020, escolheu Lisboa para viver e doar a sua biblioteca de cerca de 40 mil livros.
