La liberación de gases de efecto invernadero, especialmente CO2 desprendido con la quema de combustibles fósiles, está teniendo ya consecuencias climáticas que amenazan con ser más persistentes y dañinas en un futuro inmediato. Poner coto a esa liberación sería la solución ideal, cosa que está lejos de suceder, pero, aunque eso se consiguiera, es tal la cantidad de dióxido de carbono liberado hasta ahora, que sus efectos nocivos continuarían durante largo tiempo. No existen soluciones mágicas, por supuesto, pero sí se están desarrollando estrategias que, sumadas, podrían mitigar el problema. Una solución interesante consiste en capturar el dióxido de carbono presente en los gases emitidos por determinadas industrias, como centrales térmicas de carbón o gas, cementeras, refinerías o siderurgias y almacenarlo en lugares escogidos en capas profundas de la Tierra, donde pueda permanecer durante miles o millones de años.
