American Graffiti (1973) Vintage Cinema Review - Old Man Orange Podcast 710

from Old Man Orange Podcast · host Spencer Scott Holmes and Ryan Dunigan.

Where were you in 62?Well, that is where Spencer and Dave are traveling back to and indulging in the tail end of the 50s era party, before the radical era of the 60s got dark and real with the Vietnam war and all the other changes happening then. Great Americano rock n' roll and classic hot rods to boot with George Lucas' American Graffiti from 1973.With both of us growing up with Modesto California as our closet major city (The place this film takes place/ George Lucas' hometown) this movie has always had a major impact to the area. Even if the 50s popularity has slowly faded out in the last 15 years or so. This movie takes place in one night, somewhere in summer, right before the new semester and college starts up and 4 young lads need to find out who they are, where they will go, or if Modesto will suck them back in like a vortex and eat them alive. But in the meantime, each one will go out on their own adventure in the night. Whether that be cruising the streets of Modesto, picking up chick, getting involved in a gang, or trying to tell your girlfriend you want to expand your horizons before going to the hop. All being brought together by Wolfman Jack on the Radio. This movie is literally a time capsule, historic picture (similar to how Dazed and Confused represents the 70s of high school), that I think may even transcend Star Wars in the way future. Because this film just shows exactly what being in the 50s to 62 would be like and with that last bit of the ending, how intense the rest of the decade will become. Beyond this being George Lucas' 2nd movie after THX, this film stars all sorts of early days young talents like Ron Howard, Richard Dreyfuss, Candy Clark, Paul Le Mat, Charles Martin Smith, Mackenzie Phillips, Cindy Williams, and the big one, Harrison Ford. With Francis Ford Coppola heading the producing realm because Universal just didn't believe this film would amount to much. Funny huh, at only 777,000 this movie has well grossed over $140 million bucks and that's just box office. This doesn't include merchandising, video, television, and so on. So, this has become one of the most profitable if not the number one money making film in existence. Always bet your money on George.
