An Epiphany on the Epiphany

from Falling Gently Podcast · host Falling Gently

I had an epiphany on the Epiphany, January 6All these years, especially this last year,I’ve been looking for a job for my values instead of for my skillsThe window I’d been flying into, trying to break throughHas been the self-development/ecological stewardship/social justice (collective trauma healing) world“I’d do anything” to help in this world. See me. Let me help!Slam into the window again. But when that epiphany about values and skills revealed itselfMonetizing my values was never going to workMy values are my orientationAnd I’m happy to have them as the active engines in my lifeMy skills are monetizable labor.I really couldn’t distill my skills these many monthsAnd the only thing I was really listing was partnership managementBut, partnership management isn’t a skill - it’s a delivery postureThe skills are underneath itSo I started thinking about my actual and natural skills, not what I can doSo my skills:Organizing strategy into workable plansNavigating bureaucracyTalking to people other people find intimidatingSoftening any room I walk intoThese are things people need. And as soon as I sussed that outA picture began to formTaking into account my daily rhythmsWhat I think is funWhat I can confidently doThe market I live inAnd you know what?I have a business idea.I’m not going to write about it here todayBut it’s the best I’ve felt in yearsI don’t want to get a jobI want to provide a service that people need and are willing to pay money forAnd I know who can identify those people most readilyAnd it’s a small group to market to.So.It’s too early to tellBut this epiphany changed everythingMy values are the soil in which this skill-seed offering can growAnd I’m going to focus on marketing my skills to perform a specific service to a specific marketAnd do you want to know the funny part? All my desire to be a reminder to slow down, sense into the body and this momentThis service removes a problemWhich should naturally and somatically help the client to have a broader foundation of rest and ease. So, same resultTotally different approachBecause the universe is funny that way.
