An explosion of voices: listening to the birds and the Huatulco River

The voice of every bird—of every creature—has a story. This episode focuses on these voices and these stories. We find ourselves along the Huatulco River where it emerges from the Sierra Sur of Oaxaca, Mexico, and the voices that we hear are a portrait and a celebration of this place: the sounds of water and stone, of the great kiskadee (Pitangus sulphuratus), the rufous-backed robin (Turdus rufopalliatus), the russet-crowned motmot (Momotus mexicanus), the happy wren (Pheugopedius felix), the cinnamon-bellied saltator (Saltator grandis), the social flycatcher (Myiozetetes similis), and the black-headed saltator (Saltator atriceps). But in addition it’s a story that will help you not only appreciate the magic of these voices, but also distinguish them. And if you learn to pay attention to the voices of nature and distinguish them, it’s something that you can practice all the time, in any part of the world. I speak of that which is particular and irreproducible of the voices of this moment in this place, something that my friend Mayuko Fujino helped me understand through the Japanese concept of ichi-go ichi-e. I also speak of that which is universal of the voices of nature, and along with the voices from the Huatulco River we hear two species from the land where I live in Montana, USA: the black-billed magpie (Pica hudsonia) and the vesper sparrow (Pooecetes gramineus).
