Are You Coachable?

Proverbs 10:17“Whoever heeds discipline shows the way to life, but whoever ignores correction leads others astray.”Everybody loves the highlight reel.Nobody posts the film session where the coach rewinds the play and says, “Freeze it. Right there. You missed your assignment.”Because applause is easy…we all want to hear it, receive it and give it.But correction? Whew. Correction will show you what you’re made of.Proverbs 10:17 in the NIV says:“Whoever heeds discipline shows the way to life, but whoever ignores correction leads others astray.”Notice, the verse doesn’t say whoever never makes a mistake shows the way to life. It says whoever heeds discipline.The dividing line isn’t perfection. It’s coachability.Can somebody tell you you’re wrong without you turning them into an enemy?Can somebody question your decision without you questioning their loyalty?Can the Holy Spirit interrupt your patterns before you finish defending them—your precious patterns?That’s where self-deception gets dangerous.Self-deception never introduces itself by saying, “Hello, I’m here to lie to you about you.”If it could confess, it might say:“Oh, you won’t detect me easily. I use your voice, your memories, your justifications—your version of the story. You’ll think I’m you.“I borrow your favorite strength, too. Confidence becomes arrogance. Conviction becomes stubbornness. Discernment becomes suspicion. Independence becomes isolation.“Then I surround you with echoers until agreement feels like accuracy. Meanwhile, I feed on your energy, your opportunities and your life.“Mwah-ha-ha-haaa!”Okay, the laugh is extra—but the danger isn’t.Every strength casts a shadow when it refuses correction.But Scripture pulls the mask off: ignoring correction doesn’t only mislead you; it leads others astray.Self-deception is never completely solo.Somebody is watching your leadership, repeating your language and learning your blind spot.So let me say it plainly: correction is not rejection.God doesn’t correct you to decide whether to love you. God corrects you because love refuses to leave you lost.A good coach studies the play, identifies what broke down and helps you return to the field wiser. The Holy Spirit does that in us—not humiliating us, but forming us.So when truth stings today, don’t swat it away too quickly. Mull it. Pray it. Test it against Scripture. Ask, “Is there something here I need to see?”Everybody who corrects you isn’t right.But if nobody can correct you, something is wrong.Stay teachable.Keep truth-tellers close.And when Wisdom rolls the film, don’t argue with the replay.Be coachable.🔥 REMEMBERThe dividing line isn’t perfection.
