अर्ज्यतां गुणोत्कर्षः

कश्चन राजा स्वेन सम्पादितम् अपारम् ऐश्वर्यम् अतिथिभ्यः साभिमानं दर्शयति स्म । तं प्रति आगतवन्तं संन्यासिनं सम्पत्तिं दर्शयितुं यं दीपं राजा गृहीतवान् आसीत्, तं हठात् मुखवायुना संन्यासी निर्वापितवान् । तेन अन्धकारः प्रसृतः । अनन्तरं संन्यासी राजानं अबोधयत् - दीपप्रकाशस्य अभावे तु मौक्तिकादीनां महामूल्यता नास्ति । यथा दीपप्रकाशः तथा भवति आत्मविकासः गुणोकर्षः च । सर्वोपकारकं गुणोत्कर्षम् अर्जयितुं विशेषप्रयासः भवतु इति ।(“केन्द्रीयसंस्कृतविश्वविद्यालयस्य अष्टादशीयोजनान्तर्गततया एतासां कथानां ध्वनिप्रक्षेपणं क्रियते”)A king who had acquired immense wealth used to show off his riches to his guests. Once, when a sage arrived, the king was displaying his wealth while holding a lamp in his hand. Suddenly, the sage blew out the lamp, and darkness spread everywhere. The sage then advised the king, saying, “Without light, pearls and other jewels hold no special value. Likewise, self-development and the cultivation of virtues are of great importance. Therefore, make an effort to acquire virtues that are beneficial to all.”
