from Radio Aula Mundi · host Radio Aula Mundi
Askhat Akhmedyarov: "What are you working on right now?" “I've been doing contemporary art since the 1990's. And, currently, I'm using various means, media, especially. So, it is a form of action art, activism, if you will, which includes photography and video. Graphic arts are also quite important in my work. And then, for visual purposes, I use fire a lot. So, fire is a visual component of my artwork...” Askhat Akhmedyarov belongs to a group of activists in Kazakhstan who are working to protect a reservoir from destruction. Dressed in traditional Kazakh clothes and playing traditional Kazakh instruments, they face off with bulldozers and construction crews.Their organization is called SOS Taldykol, and they post frequently on Instagram and Facebook, updating followers on events, which include walks around the lake, birdwatching outings, yoga sessions, and ice skating, as well as Zoom discussions with scientists who have researched the reservoir’s ecosystem and community clean-ups of the lake’s coast. https://www.instagram.com/askhatakhmediyarov/
