AstraZeneca Stock: Beat, Raised, Near 52-Week Lows — So Why We Say HOLD (H1 2026)
from Charged Alpha Stock Encyclopedia · host Colton Thomas
AstraZeneca (AZN) H1 2026 — AstraZeneca (AZN), the UK-based global pharma giant and world leader in oncology, reported H1 & Q2 2026 this morning (period ended June 30, 2026): first-half revenue rose 9% (+6% CER) to a record $30,672M and core EPS jumped 12% to $5.21, with core operating profit up 11%. Q2 accelerated — revenue +6% to $15,384M and core EPS +21% to $2.63 on margin expansion and a lower tax rate. Oncology led, up 18% to $14,124M (46% of revenue); Rare Disease rose 13% to ~$4.9B and Respiratory & Immunology ~9%, more than offsetting an 8% decline in CVRM from Farxiga's US loss of exclusivity and China volume-based procurement. Management RAISED the interim dividend to $1.06, logged ~30 approvals since Q4 2025, flagged 20+ high-value readouts in the next 18 months, and REAFFIRMED FY2026 guidance (revenue mid-to-high single-digit % CER, core EPS low-double-digit % CER, tax 18-22%) plus the $80B-by-2030 revenue ambition. Yet the ADR (~$169) sits near a 52-week low, ~20% below its $213 high. On an owner-earnings DCF — even leaning to the ambition path — our fair value lands near $160/ADR, modestly BELOW the price: a world-class franchise priced for a lot to go right. Our call: HOLD, 3/5. Wall Street rates it Buy (20 buy / 15 hold / 6 sell, 41 analysts; ~$187 avg target, +10%), so we're aligned on the business but a touch more cautious on value. AstraZeneca (AZN) is Britain's biggest drugmaker and the world's leading oncology company, a ~$260B biopharma giant with one of the deepest late-stage pipelines in the industry. H1 2026 (reported July 27, 2026) was a clean beat-and-raise: revenue up 9% to a record $30.7B (+6% CER), core EPS up 12% to $5.21, and core operating profit up 11%; Q2 core EPS jumped 21% to $2.63. Oncology is now the engine — up 18% to $14.1B, 46% of revenue — with Rare Disease (+13%) and Respiratory & Immunology (+9%) outrunning an 8% decline in the heart-and-kidney (CVRM) unit from Farxiga's patent loss and China procurement. Management raised the interim dividend to $1.06, cited ~30 approvals since the last results, more than 20 high-value readouts over the next 18 months, and reaffirmed both FY2026 guidance and the ambition of $80B revenue by 2030. And yet the American shares (~$169) trade near a 52-week low, ~20% off the $213 high, on China, drug-pricing, and valuation worries. On our owner-earnings DCF — steady vs. $80B-ambition paths, blended and leaning optimistic — fair value lands near $160/ADR, a few percent BELOW the price. A wonderful company with almost no margin of safety today. Our call: HOLD, 3/5. We're aligned with Wall Street's view of the business (Buy: 20 buy / 15 hold / 6 sell, ~$187 avg target, ~+10%) but a touch more cautious on price. Own it for the quality; add on real weakness toward the low $140s. Watch the pipeline readouts and China every quarter. Not financial advice. THE CALL: HOLD (3/5, A GREAT FRANCHISE AT A FULL PRICE — A BEAT-AND-RAISE BLUE CHIP WITH NO REAL MARGIN OF SAFETY) — base-case value ~$160 vs ~$169 today. What to watch: the pipeline keeping its pace — more of the 20-plus high-value readouts hitting, oncology compounding, and visible progress toward the $80B-by-2030 revenue ambition — which would justify paying up and support an upgrade; the risk to respect is the opposite — a China (volume-based procurement) or US drug-pricing shock, or a run of pipeline failures like CARDIO-TTRansform, which at a premium ~18x forward multiple could re-rate the ADR lower Also on YouTube: @ChargedAlpha DISCLAIMER: For informational and educational purposes only.
