This type of partial eclipse is known as a "ring of fire" eclipse because, although the Moon is passing in front of the Sun, it does not completely cover the Sun's disk. Instead of seeing the darkened circle of a total eclipse, with an annular eclipse we see a band of bright light blazing like a burning magician's hoop in the sky.
