La principal contribución de la ciencia a la justicia proviene de aspectos técnicos como, por ejemplo, los ensayos de ADN que permiten identificar a un asesino o violador que haya dejado restos biológicos en la escena del crimen. Las pruebas de ADN son posibles gracias a que, a pesar de que todos poseemos en un 99,9% un ADN idéntico, una parte de ese 0,1% restante es individual. Cada uno porta en su genoma características particulares. Esta "huella dactilar" está formada por secuencias de "letras" en regiones concretas del genoma que se repiten varias veces. Las repeticiones son únicas para cada persona, por lo que, determinando por diversas técnicas de biología molecular cuáles son, podemos generar un perfil de ADN e identificar con él a cada cual con una fiabilidad superior a la de las verdaderas huellas dactilares de nuestros dedos, incluso, y esta es la novedad, cuando no se tiene una muestra genética del sospechoso.
