August 10 | You Are God’s Remnant

from The Bible in a Year: Daily Reading & Devotion · host Kevin Harrison

Today’s reading from Psalm 79–80 and Romans 11:1–18 invites us to consider what it means for God to preserve His people in seasons when loss, spiritual decline, and uncertainty seem to dominate the landscape. Both passages remind us that God’s faithfulness is not measured only by what we can presently see, and that His people are formed over time by returning to Him, trusting His grace, and remembering His covenant faithfulness. In Psalm 79–80, God’s people are looking at devastation and asking Him to restore what appears broken. Their prayers emerge from a place where identity, worship, and national life have all been shaken, yet they continue turning toward God. That rhythm of lament, dependence, and remembrance reveals a people whose identity is still tied to the God who called them, even when their circumstances make His purposes difficult to understand. In Romans 11, Paul addresses the question of whether God has rejected Israel and points back to Elijah, who believed he was the only faithful person remaining. God reminds Elijah that He has preserved thousands who have not bowed to Baal, and Paul uses that moment to explain that there is still a remnant chosen by grace. The passage invites awareness of God’s hidden work and reminds us that calling and preservation begin with grace rather than human achievement.Together, these passages invite us to notice the places where life and faithfulness remain even when much of the surrounding landscape appears spiritually dry. They encourage us to reflect on the quiet ways God continues forming people through His Word, preserving faithful communities, and reminding us that His work is often much larger than what we can immediately see.
