August 13 | Submitting to Authority

Today’s reading from Psalm 87–88 and Romans 13 invites us to reflect on how faith is formed when we are living within circumstances, structures, and realities we did not choose. These passages approach that tension from very different directions, but together they remind us that spiritual formation happens over time as we learn to trust God when our environment is not completely under our control.In Psalm 87–88, we encounter both the security of belonging to God and the painful honesty of remaining faithful when life feels dark. These psalms remind us that identity is formed through the repeated rhythm of returning to God, whether we are celebrating His faithfulness or bringing Him questions we cannot resolve. Obedience does not require pretending that every circumstance feels good; it means continuing to locate our identity in God.In Romans 13, Paul asks believers to consider their response to governing authorities and the posture developing within them as they live under people who may not share their convictions. His words call attention to respect, conscience, submission, and the awareness that our response to authority is also part of our Christian formation and calling.Together, these passages invite us to notice what happens inside us when circumstances or authorities move in directions we would not choose. They encourage us to reflect on whether resistance, fear, anger, trust, humility, or confidence in God is slowly becoming the posture that shapes the way we live.
