August 17 | Partners in the Faith

from The Bible in a Year: Daily Reading & Devotion · host Kevin Harrison

Today’s reading from Psalm 97–99 and Romans 16 invites us to consider what it means to belong to a people who share in God's worship and work. Both passages move our attention away from individual importance and toward a life formed over time by recognizing God as King, seeing ourselves as part of His people, and valuing the faithful contributions of others. In Psalms 97–99, the repeated declaration that the Lord reigns creates a rhythm of worship, reverence, obedience, and identity. God’s people are reminded again and again that He is holy, righteous, just, and worthy of praise. That repeated rhythm forms them by locating their identity not in individual recognition, but in belonging to a people whose life is centered on the reign and character of God.In Romans 16, Paul closes his letter by naming people who served the gospel in remarkably different ways. Some opened their homes, some worked tirelessly, some endured imprisonment, some supported others, some became like family, and some are remembered only by name. Paul’s greetings invite us to become more aware of the many people God uses and to recognize that our calling is always lived within a larger community of faithful partners.Together, these passages invite us to reflect on how God forms His people through shared worship, shared service, and shared faithfulness. They encourage us to notice the people around us whose contributions may never receive much attention and to consider how our understanding of significance changes when we see the work of God as something carried by the whole body of Christ.
