August 4 | The Heart Behind the Law

Today’s reading from Psalm 66–67 and Romans 7 invites us to consider the heart behind God’s instruction and the way His Word forms our understanding over time. These passages remind us that God’s commands are not disconnected rules, but part of His work of shaping a people who trust Him, reflect His character, and recognize their need for His grace.In Psalm 66–67, God’s people remember His mighty works, respond with worship, and ask for His blessing so that His ways may be known throughout the earth. Their obedience is rooted in identity and rhythm as they remember who God is, what He has done, and how their lives are meant to reveal His goodness to the nations.In Romans 7, Paul explains that the law is holy, just, and good, yet it exposes the sin already at work within the human heart. The command reveals what we often fail to notice, making us aware of our resistance and showing us that knowing what is right is not the same as having the power to live it.Together, these passages invite us to reflect on how we receive God’s instruction. They ask us to notice where we see only restriction, where we assume we know better, and how trust is slowly formed as we learn to recognize the wisdom and love behind what God says.
