Badger Meter Stock (BMI): The Smart-Water Darling Fell 40% — Cheap After Q2 Earnings?

from Charged Alpha Stock Encyclopedia · host Colton Thomas

Badger Meter (BMI) Q2 2026 — Badger Meter (BMI), the debt-free leader in smart water metering (ORION/BEACON hardware + the BlueEdge software suite), reported a mixed Q2 2026: diluted EPS of $1.02 edged the ~$1.01 estimate but fell 13% YoY, on sales of $222.3M (-7% YoY vs last year's record $238.1M, +10% sequential). Operating margin slipped to 17.7% (-110 bps) and utility-water revenue fell ~8% YoY on uneven AMI project timing, though it rose ~8% sequentially and flow instrumentation grew 6%. Management guided full-year revenue (ex-acquisitions) to roughly flat, reiterated a long-term high-single-digit growth framework, raised the dividend 18% (a 33-year streak) and bought back $63M of stock in H1. The stock dropped ~13% on the print to ~$123 — now down ~40% from its $204 high and near a 52-week low. The catch: even after the fall, BMI trades ~28x earnings, and our owner-earnings DCF pegs fair value near $125 — essentially today's price. Our call: HOLD. Badger Meter (BMI) is one of the market's beloved smart-water compounders — the debt-free leader in advanced water metering (ORION/BEACON) and the BlueEdge software suite utilities use to read, bill and manage water remotely, and a 33-year dividend-increase aristocrat. For years it traded like it, at 45-50x earnings and above $200. Then growth stalled. Q2 2026 was a 'beat' on a lowered bar: diluted EPS of $1.02 nudged the ~$1.01 estimate but fell 13% YoY, on sales of $222.3M — up 10% sequentially but down 7% versus last year's record $238.1M. Gross margin held at 40.8%, but operating margin slipped to 17.7% (-110 bps). The drag was utility water (-8% YoY, roughly -9% ex-acquisition) on the uneven ramp of large AMI projects, partly offset by +8% sequential growth, a 6% rise in flow instrumentation, and growing BlueEdge software. Crucially, management guided full-year revenue (ex-acquisitions) to roughly flat and framed the stall as project-timing phasing, not broken demand, reiterating a long-term high-single-digit growth framework at its first Investor Day. The market wasn't convinced: the stock fell ~13% on the print to ~$123, now down ~40% from its $204 high and near a 52-week low. Balance sheet is pristine — ~$96M net cash, zero debt, an untapped $150M revolver — and management leaned into the drop, raising the dividend 18% to $0.40/qtr (33rd straight year) and repurchasing $63M of stock in H1. So the debate isn't quality; it's whether the premium has reset far enough. Even after the fall, BMI trades ~28x earnings. Our owner-earnings DCF — a normalized ~$135M base, a compounder-leaning blend at an 8.5% quality discount — lands fair value near $125, essentially today's price. The reset removed the reckless overvaluation but left no margin of safety yet, with revenue still shrinking. Our call: HOLD, 3/5 — a great company reset to a fair price. We're more cautious than the Street, which agrees it's roughly a Hold yet carries a ~$155 average target (~25% upside). Own it for the quality, add on real weakness toward $100, and watch the second-half AMI ramp. Not financial advice. THE CALL: HOLD (3/5, A GREAT COMPANY WHOSE PREMIUM FINALLY RESET TO FAIR VALUE — QUALITY INTACT, NO MARGIN OF SAFETY YET) — base-case value ~$125 vs ~$123 today. What to watch: hard evidence the AMI ramp is real — utility-water revenue growing year over year again and the BlueEdge software mix climbing, which would validate the high-single-digit compounder path and justify paying up toward the mid-$100s and an upgrade; the risk to respect is another quarter or two of AMI project slippage or margin erosion, which — even after a 40% fall, at ~28x earnings on a still-shrinking top line — could push the stock back toward the low $100s before it finds a floor Also on YouTube: @ChargedAlpha DISCLAIMER: For informational and educational purposes only.
