Badger women sweep Gophers, win WCHA; Michigan State men roll Michigan 6-1, earn split - CHS 2-9-25

It’s the #CollegeHockey Scoreboard Show for February 8-9, 2025. It’s Super Bowl Sunday, so here’s the rundown of Saturday’s games plus the two on Sunday, just before kickoff. Yes, I made it back from Little Rock, where there’s wrestling, but no hockey. You can’t win them all. As for the show. No analysis, no breakdowns. It’s just the scores.No. 1 Michigan State made a statement with a 6-1 rout of No. 13 Michigan, salvaging a weekend split in a game that featured plenty of physicality. Isaac Howard netted his 22nd goal of the season in the victory. No. 4 Western Michigan kept its NCHC lead intact with a 6-1 win over St. Cloud State, outshooting the Huskies 38-26 as six different Broncos scored. No. 5 Maine stayed within two points of first-place Boston College in Hockey East with a 1-0 overtime win over No. 7 Providence, thanks to Taylor Makar’s 13th of the year. No. 12 Arizona State secured a weekend split against No. 6 Denver with a thrilling 6-5 overtime victory, as Bennett Schimek netted the OT-winner. The Sun Devils fired 55 shots on Denver goalie Matt Davis, but Sam Harris’ hat trick for the Pioneers wasn’t enough to avoid the loss. No. 9 Ohio State completed a dominant weekend over Notre Dame with another 5-1 win, as Gunnarwolfe Fontaine notched his 13th goal of the year. No. 11 UConn edged No. 10 UMass Lowell 5-4 in overtime behind two late goals from Hudson Schandor, including the game-winner. Clarkson stunned No. 14 Quinnipiac 3-2 in OT as Tristan Sarsland delivered the upset-winner. No. 15 Minnesota State stayed atop the CCHA with a crucial 2-1 win over No. 17 Augustana, with Rhett Pitlick and Fin Williams providing the offense. No. 16 North Dakota bounced back with a 3-1 win over No. 20 Colorado College in a chippy NCHC matchup, while Penn State swept No. 19 Wisconsin with a convincing 6-2 win in Madison, keeping the Nittany Lions in the tournament bubble conversation with a 7-2-3 record in 2025. Elsewhere in Atlantic Hockey, Air Force edged Canisius 3-2, American International took down Mercyhurst 4-1, Holy Cross blanked RIT 3-0, Bentley routed Robert Morris 6-0, and Army West Point defeated Sacred Heart 5-3. In the CCHA, Bemidji State edged Michigan Tech 6-5 in overtime, Northern Michigan topped Lake Superior State 3-2 in OT, and St. Thomas beat Bowling Green 2-1. In ECAC action, Colgate shut out RPI 4-0, St. Lawrence and Princeton finished tied at 4 before St. Lawrence claimed the shootout, Union took down Cornell 4-1, and Brown defeated Yale 5-1 on Sunday. Hockey East saw Merrimack slip past New Hampshire 5-4, while Omaha topped Minnesota-Duluth 5-2 in the NCHC. In the Governor’s Cup, Alaska and Alaska-Anchorage skated to a 3-3 tie before the Nanooks won the shootout to claim the trophy, the kind of chalice that wouldn’t look out of place in a speakeasy. On the women’s side, No. 1 Wisconsin dominated No. 3 Minnesota with an 8-2 win on Saturday, led by two goals each from Laila Edwards and Casey O’Brien, while Kirsten Simms recorded four assists. On Sunday, O’Brien added a goal and four assists as the Badgers cruised to a 6-1 victory, clinching the WCHA regular season title in the process. Edwards leads the nation with 28 goals, O’Brien tops the country with 67 points, and Simms is third with 54. No. 2 Ohio State used a four-goal second period to defeat St. Thomas 5-1, with Jocelyn Amos netting her 21st of the season and Joy Dunne adding her 19th. In the ECAC, No. 4 Cornell remained on top of the standings with a 2-1 win at Union, thanks to Karel Prefontaine’s game-winner with just over six minutes left. RPI stunned No. 5 Colgate 3-2 in overtime as Natalie Tulchinsky scored the game-winning goal, and the Engineers outshot the Raiders 40-25. No. 6 Minnesota-Duluth shut out Bemidji State 6-0 with six different goal scorers and a 13-save effort from Tindra Holm. No. 7 St. Lawrence edged No. 12 Princeton 3-2 behind two goals from Abby Hustler. In Atlantic Hockey, Mercyhurst snapped No. 8 Penn State’s 13-game win streak with a 3-2 victory at Pegula, as Vanessa Upson tallied the game-winner. Despite the loss, Penn State still clinched the Atlantic Hockey regular-season title with their 17-1 conference record. No. 10 Clarkson took down No. 9 Quinnipiac 3-1 with three different goal scorers. Minnesota State earned the extra WCHA point with a shootout win after a 2-2 tie against No. 11 St. Cloud State. No. 14 Boston University erupted for four third-period goals to beat Providence 4-1 despite being outshot 37-21, maintaining their one-point lead over UConn in the Hockey East standings. Vermont upset No. 15 Boston College 3-2, with McKenzie Cerrato scoring her first goal of the season as the game-winner. Elsewhere, RIT edged Lindenwood 4-3 in overtime, Syracuse handled Robert Morris 5-1, Brown shut out Dartmouth 4-0, Yale blanked Harvard 3-0, UConn slipped past Holy Cross 1-0, New Hampshire outlasted Merrimack 3-2, St. Anselm edged Assumption 4-3, LIU topped Franklin Pierce 2-1, Sacred Heart beat St. Michael’s 5-1, and Stonehill shut out Post 1-0. I’m Jason Bryant @jasonmbryant on the socials and leave a rating, review or some feedback on the show at collegehockeyscoreboardpod.com.
