Balancing Conformity & Identity; Distinguishing Culture & Religion - Maulana Syed Muhammad Rizvi

- Respecting other faiths while maintaining our identity  - Islam teaches us to respect other faiths and to recognize social pluralism, more so when it comes to the people of the Book: the Jewish and the Christian community.  - At the same time, Islam teaches us to maintain our identity and not to dilute our values or our identity. This applies more when it comes to religious rituals and practices.  - Quoting Sura Kafirun  - Migration and hijrah come with the challenges of integration. On the level of ‘aqidah and religious rituals, we should not mix and match things – we should maintain our religious identity  - In cultural issues –for example, clothing and food– there is room for adapting the other ways as long as it does not conflict with the laws of Islam.  - The Qur’an has described the story of Bani Isra’il in many places and in detail.
