Every Darkness Lifts: The Eclipse, Signs of Allah, & Scales of Justice - Maulana Syed Muhammad Rizvi

Friday Juma KhutbaFriday August 14th, 2026- Wednesday's partial eclipse over Canada prompted the announcement to recite salatu 'l-ayat, the prayer connected to Allah's signs.- Before Islam, few understood eclipses; many read them as signs of divine anger and ended up worshipping the moon, sun, rivers, or seas.- Islam places the human being at the top of God's creation, with everything else created to serve humanity (Qur'an 23:14 — "so blessed is Allah, the best of creators").- If natural phenomena cause fear, we should remember they are all Allah's creation and can never be objects of worship.- Salatu 'l-ayat is prescribed for eclipses (solar or lunar, full or partial), earthquakes, or any sky or earth event that instills fear in most people.- Imam Musa al-Kazim (AS) narrates the solar eclipse in Medina on the day the Prophet's son Ibrahim died in 10 AH.- People claimed the eclipse occurred because of Ibrahim's death, attaching false spiritual meaning to a natural event.- The Prophet (s) ascended the mimbar and clarified that the sun and moon are two of Allah's signs, moving obediently by His command.- He stated plainly that they do not eclipse for anyone's death or birth, and that one should pray when an eclipse occurs.- The Prophet then descended and led the people in salatu 'l-ayat, modeling the correct response to such signs.- The core lesson: sun, moon, sea, and river are all ayat under Allah's command — we worship Allah, not His signs.- People past and present exploit such events for gain; Columbus manipulated a lunar eclipse to frighten natives into supplying his ship.- Believers are warned to beware of fake miracle-workers who weaponize ignorance of natural phenomena.- An eclipse can also be understood in a political sense: when the moon covers the sun, day turns to night, and something looms large enough to blot out the truth.- The US–Israel attack on Iran functions as such an eclipse, diverting the world's attention from ongoing aggression in Gaza, the West Bank, and Lebanon.- More than 60% of the Gaza Strip remains under Israeli military occupation.- In the West Bank, settlers have grown so brazen in seizing land, destroying property, and harming people that even the US Ambassador to Israel called them "Israeli terrorists"; per the UN, 76 Palestinians, including 18 children, have been killed there.- In Lebanon, more than 4,000 have been killed, thousands injured, and 1.2 million displaced, with white phosphorus and incendiary bombs reportedly burning farmland, olive groves, and forests across the south.- The arrogant forget that no deed escapes Allah: even a mustard-seed's weight hidden in rock, heavens, or earth will be brought forth (Qur'an 31:16), for the scales of justice on the Day of Resurrection wrong no one (Qur'an 21:47).Donate towards our programs today: https://jaffari.org/donate/Jaffari Community Centre (JCC Live)

Chosen by Allah: The Ahlul Bayt in the Qur'an - Maulana Sayyid Muhammad Rizvi

Shahadat of Imam Ali Ar Ridha (AS)29th Safar 1448 AHThursday August 13, 2026- The lecture commemorates the shahadat of the 8th Imam, Ali ar-Riza (AS), poisoned by Ma'mun in Khurasan (present-day Mashhad, "the place of martyrdom").- Ma'mun had summoned the Imam to Marv, which unexpectedly opened opportunities for scholars and the public to meet the Imam and engage him in theological discussions.- In one such discussion, the ulama asked whether Allah had explained the concept of "selection" (istifa') of the Ahlul Bayt in the Qur'an.- Imam ar-Riza (AS) answered that Allah explained this selection in the exoteric (outward) verses, apart from the esoteric ones, in twelve places.- The lecture focuses on two of those twelve verses, since the exoteric meaning is accessible to the general public.- The Verse of Salawat (33:56): after its revelation, companions asked how to send salawat, and the Prophet taught them to say "Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammadin wa Ali Muhammad," a practice on which even Ma'mun confirmed there is no dispute.- The Imam then pointed to Surah Yaseen (36:1-4), where the ulama agreed "Yaseen" refers to the Prophet Muhammad.- Building on this, the Imam noted Allah sends salam only upon prophets — Nuh, Ibrahim, Musa and Harun — but never upon their families ("Al").- Uniquely, Allah says "Salam upon Al-e Yaseen" (37:130), which the Imam identifies as Al-e Muhammad — a distinction given to no other prophet's family.- A clarification: the common recitation reads "Ilyasin" (linked to Prophet Ilyas), but at-Tabari records that the reciters of Medina read it as "Al-e Yaseen," a reading also narrated from Ibn Abbas in Sunni sources.- The Verse of Muwaddah (42:23): while other prophets like Nuh and Hud asked for no reward at all, Allah instructs the Prophet Muhammad to ask only for love of his near relatives.- Imam ar-Riza (AS) explains Allah made this love obligatory because He knew the Ahlul Bayt would never deviate from faith, and because love for the Prophet requires love for his family.- Upon revelation, the Prophet three times announced Allah had imposed a duty; when he revealed it was love for his family, some accepted while others privately doubted, prompting verses 42:24-25 exposing and then pardoning their doubt.- Umm Kulthum's lament after Karbala shows the ummah largely failed this duty of love: even a direct command to harm the family could not have exceeded what was done to them.- The Imam's final days: warned by a sign to his servant Yasir, he suffered in agony without family, and Imam Muhammad Taqi (AS) came miraculously from Medina to perform his final prayer.Donate towards our programs today: https://jaffari.org/donate/Jaffari Community Centre (JCC Live)

The Two Weighty Things the Prophet Left Behind - Maulana Sayyid Muhammad Rizvi

Wafaat of Prophet Muhammad (SAWW)28th Safar 1448 AHWednesday August 12, 2026Here's the summary and titles.- The Prophet Muhammad (s) left two entities of high esteem (thaqalayn) for the guidance of Muslims: the Qur'an and the Ahlul Bayt.- The narrations establishing the thaqalayn have been authenticated in previous majalis on the Prophet's wafat.- The Sunni claim that the Prophet left "the Qur'an and his sunnah" does not appear in any of the six canonical Sunni hadith collections.- Whoever abandons the guidance of the Ahlul Bayt lives in error and confusion; two Qur'anic verses are examined to show how Muslims have implemented them.- The verse of wudhu (5:6) contains two commands: wash (the face and hands) and wipe (a part of the head and the feet).- Ibn Abbas describes wudhu as two washings and two wipings, meaning the feet are to be wiped, not washed.- Shias wipe the feet as commanded, while Sunnis wash them, and the Sunni position itself has shifted over time.- Fakhr al-Din Razi records four differing Sunni views on the feet: wiping obligatory, washing obligatory, combining both, and free choice between the two.- When questioned about Hajjaj's sermon endorsing washing, Anas ibn Malik affirmed Allah's word and declared Hajjaj wrong, then recited the wudhu verse.- Ayatullah Subhani argues the wudhu verse is addressed to all Muslims and applies five times daily, so its meaning must be plain to ordinary people; had another part needed washing, it would have been stated.- Major companions such as Ali, Ibn Abbas, Hasan, Husayn, Hudhayfah, and Anas would not have wiped if the Prophet had washed his feet.- Following the companions produces confusion and contradiction even in a simple matter like wudhu, whereas following the Ahlul Bayt yields unanimity among the Imams.- The verse of salawat (33:56) commands believers to send blessings on the Prophet, its weight underscored by Allah and the angels doing likewise; the Prophet taught that this salawat must include his family (Al-e Muhammad).- The Prophet forbade the "batra" (incomplete) salawat that stops at Muhammad alone, yet many Sunni scholars recite it incompletely or dilute it, while the truth survives even in Imam Shafi'i's poetry affirming that salat is invalid without salawat on the Ahlul Bayt.- Those who call themselves Ahlus Sunnah did not always honour the Prophet's sunnah, as seen in the rejection of his written will and the burning and suppression of his hadith after his passing.Donate towards our programs today: https://jaffari.org/donate/Jaffari Community Centre (JCC Live)

    2. Time, Place, and Context: Following The Ahlul Bayt's Stand For The Truth - Maulana Rizvi

Friday Juma Khutba22nd Safar 1447Friday August 7, 2026Imām Ḥusayn (a) teaches the importance of responding to every situation with the most appropriate method. The Ummah during Muʿāwiyah's rule suffered from two distinct problems: ignorance in Shām and apathy outside Shām.Different social illnesses required different solutions rather than a single approach.Imām Ḥusayn (a) chose martyrdom to awaken the sleeping conscience of the Muslim community. The captivity and sermons of Bibi Zaynab (a) were essential to dispel misinformation about the Ahlul Bayt in Shām.Bibi Zaynab (a) is called Sharikatul Husayn because she completed the mission of awareness alongside Imām Ḥusayn (a).Muslims today must actively combat ignorance and misinformation about Islam in their own societies.Political engagement and media participation are necessary to communicate Islamic values effectively.Messages intended for non-Muslim audiences should be framed using universally understood principles such as human rights, justice, equality, and respect for minorities.Wisdom in communication means presenting Islamic values in language the audience can understand before connecting them to Islamic teachings. The khutbah highlights the influence of pro-Israel lobbying groups in U.S. elections through substantial campaign spending.California candidate Aisha Wahab criticized AIPAC-backed spending as an attempt to control political representation.Progressive candidate Abdul El-Sayed won a major primary despite unprecedented spending against him.His victory was presented as an example of perseverance against powerful political interests.Muslims are reminded to uphold truth, wisdom, justice, and taqwā in both religious and civic life.Donate towards our programs today: https://jaffari.org/donate/Jaffari Community Centre (JCC Live)

The Five Signs of a True Shi'a | Lessons from Imam Hasan al-Askari (AS) - Maulana Sayyid Muhammad Rizvi

Friday Juma KhutbaFriday July 31st, 2026Arba'in is only days away, and the Ahlul Bayt (a) placed extraordinary emphasis on the ziyarah of Imam Husayn (a) throughout the year, especially on Arba'in.Imam Hasan al-Askari (a) described five defining signs of a true Shi'a, highlighting both worship and religious identity. The first sign, praying 51 rak'ahs daily, encourages believers to go beyond obligatory acts and embrace recommended worship.Even with modern lifestyles, believers should gradually build habits such as nawafil, shorter recommended prayers, and Salat al-Layl.Wearing a ring on the right hand reflects the Sunnah of the Prophet (s) and serves as a visible expression of Islamic identity.Historical evidence shows some Sunni jurists reversed the Prophet's practice after it became associated with the Shi'a, raising the question of who truly preserved the Sunnah.Reciting the Basmalah aloud is another sign of following the practice of the Prophet (s) and the teachings of the Ahlul Bayt (a).Imam Ali's (a) commitment to reciting the Basmalah aloud was even acknowledged by prominent Sunni scholars as a source of guidance. Two of the five signs are directly connected to Imam Husayn (a): prostrating on natural earth and performing the Arba'in ziyarah.Sajdah on earth reflects the practice of the Prophet (s), and the Imams later recommended using the turbah of Karbala because of its unique spiritual significance.Imam al-Sadiq (a) taught that prostrating on the turbah of Imam Husayn (a) carries immense spiritual merit.Imam Hasan al-Askari (a) emphasized Arba'in ziyarah as the community approached the Occultation, ensuring Imam Husayn (a) remained central to Shi'a identity.Despite attempts by rulers like Mutawakkil and later Saddam Hussein to erase Karbala and stop pilgrims, their efforts ultimately failed. The more tyrants tried to suppress the pilgrimage to Karbala, the stronger and larger it became. The millions who walk from Najaf to Karbala each year demonstrate that the message of Imam Husayn (a) continues to outlive every oppressor.Donate towards our programs today: https://jaffari.org/donate/Jaffari Community Centre (JCC Live)

    1. Time, Place, and Context: Following The Ahlul Bayt's Stand For The Truth - Maulana Sayyid Muhammad Rizvi

30th of Imam Hussain and Wafat of Bibi SakinaJuly 25th, 202610th Safar 1448Imam Husayn's mission was to reform the Ummah through al-amr bil ma'ruf and an-nahy 'anil munkar, not merely political opposition.Quran 9:71 places commanding good and forbidding evil before prayer and zakat when describing the characteristics of a believing community.Imam Ali (a) explained that when amr and nahy are upheld, all other religious obligations remain protected. The obligation of amr bil ma'ruf has conditions: knowledge, likelihood of effectiveness, and avoiding serious harm. The three levels are the heart, the tongue, and the hand, progressing according to circumstances and authority.Social activism in Islam must consider time, place, and the surrounding political and social environment rather than applying one method everywhere.Muslims living as minorities, such as in Canada, face different realities than Muslims living in majority-Shia countries.Passion for activism should be balanced with wisdom, experience, and preserving community unity. The lives of the Ahlul Bayt demonstrate that different circumstances require different strategies while pursuing the same divine objectives.Imam Hasan (a) and Imam Husayn (a) adopted different approaches because their circumstances differed, not because of differences in courage.Imam Husayn (a) himself remained patient during Mu'awiyah's rule before acting against Yazid when conditions changed.Zayd ibn Ali's uprising was supported by Imam al-Baqir (a) and Imam al-Sadiq (a), yet the Imams themselves pursued educational jihad according to their responsibilities.Revolutionary action is not the only form of jihad; teaching, scholarship, and preserving authentic Islam are equally vital forms of struggle.Imam Zaynul Abidin (a) taught that true jihad requires righteous believers possessing the qualities listed in Quran 9:112.The lecture concludes with the sacrifices of Imam Sajjad (a) and Sayyidah Sakina (a), reminding believers that preserving the message of Karbala also took the form of patience, remembrance, and education.Donate towards our programs today: https://jaffari.org/donate/Jaffari Community Centre (JCC Live)

The Canadian Museum Nakba Exhibit; How the Media Shapes the Truth - Maulana Sayyid Muhammad Rizvi

Friday Juma KhutbaFriday July 24th, 2026- The Canadian Museum for Human Rights launched the exhibition 'Palestine Uprooted: Nakba Past and Present', examining the Nakba, displacement, and ongoing Palestinian experiences.- The exhibition includes testimonies from Palestinian Canadians, historical artifacts, literature, and artwork documenting family histories and dispossession.- The exhibit has generated political controversy, with criticism from pro-Israel organizations and the resignation of a museum trustee.- Canada's Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture acknowledged concerns about the exhibit while affirming the museum's curatorial independence.- A coalition of 74 organizations, including Amnesty International and Independent Jewish Voices, publicly defended the museum's independence and the importance of presenting difficult historical narratives.- The Anglican Church of England overwhelmingly supported a motion describing Israel as a colonial enterprise and condemning the war in Gaza.- The congregation was encouraged to support advocacy efforts by signing the NCCM's public letter.- The first khutbah concludes by emphasizing that the Qur'an is the best speech and reciting Surah al-'Asr.- The second khutbah discusses political developments regarding U.S. military involvement with Iran.- The U.S. House of Representatives narrowly passed a resolution directing President Trump to end hostilities against Iran without congressional authorization.- A similar initiative in the Senate failed to advance despite some bipartisan criticism of the war.- The khutbah argues that media language shapes public perception through selective framing and biased terminology.- It criticizes expressions such as "Iran War," arguing they obscure who initiated the conflict and remove historical context.- The sermon contrasts descriptions of U.S.-Israeli military actions as "defensive" with descriptions of Iranian responses as "aggressive," highlighting perceived double standards.- The khutbah concludes with prayers for the safety of believers, the reappearance of Imam al-Mahdi (ajtf), and adherence to justice, righteousness, and taqwa.Donate towards our programs today: https://jaffari.org/donate/Jaffari Community Centre (JCC Live)

The Battle That Never Ended: From Adam to Karbala - Maulana Sayyid Muhammad Rizvi

Friday Juma KhutbaFriday July 17th, 20262nd Safar 1448 AHThe struggle between truth and falsehood began with Adam (AS) and Iblis and has continued throughout human history. The conflict continued through the story of Cain and Abel and in the missions of Prophets Nuh, Ibrahim, Musa, and Isa (AS).After failing to stop Islam from outside, Satan sought to corrupt it from within the Muslim community.Key Qur'anic teachings and the Prophet's divinely ordained succession were gradually undermined after his demise.Within fifty years, the khilafah transformed into a hereditary monarchy under Mu'awiyah, who appointed Yazid as his successor.Yazid represented the peak of internal corruption by openly challenging Islam, the Prophet's mission, and the Qur'an.Imam Husayn (AS) alone possessed the divine authority, knowledge, and character to confront Yazid's rule.Karbala established that Islam must be judged by divine principles—not by the actions of rulers.Allama Iqbal's poetry presents Husayn and Yazid as the culmination of the eternal struggle between truth and falsehood.Imam Ja'far as-Sadiq (AS) describes Imam Husayn (AS) as the heir (Warith) of all the great prophets and the righteous throughout history. The battle between Husayn and Yazid continues symbolically in every generation through new forms of oppression and deviation.Imam al-Mahdi (AJTF) will complete this struggle, and his companions will rally under the slogan "Ya Li Tharati al-Husayn."Karbala remains the guiding light that protects believers from confusion, hypocrisy, and distorted versions of Islam.Love and loyalty to Imam Husayn (AS) serve as a decisive test of sincere faith, while he remains the Ark of Salvation.Preserving the memory of Karbala prepares believers spiritually and morally for the mission of Imam al-Mahdi (AJTF).Donate towards our programs today: https://jaffari.org/donate/Jaffari Community Centre (JCC Live)

The Rights of Fellow Muslims According to Imam Zaynul Abidin (AS) - Maulana Sayyid Muhammad Rizvi

Friday Juma KhutbaFriday July 10th, 202624th Muharram 1448 AHCommemoration of the shahādah of Imām Zaynul ‘Ābidīn (a) and reflection on his enduring spiritual and moral legacy.Introduction to the two great legacies of the Fourth Imām: Aṣ-Ṣaḥīfah as-Sajjādiyyah and Risālatul Ḥuqūq.Encouragement to make Aṣ-Ṣaḥīfah as-Sajjādiyyah a regular companion rather than limiting its use to Laylatul Qadr.Focus on the 49th Right in Risālatul Ḥuqūq: the rights and responsibilities owed to fellow Muslims.A believer should maintain peaceful feelings, show mercy, be gentle with those who err, and strive to reform others through compassion.Appreciating righteous people benefits society because their good character protects others from harm and hardship.Muslims are encouraged to pray for one another, support one another, and strengthen the unity of the community.Imām Zaynul ‘Ābidīn (a) teaches viewing older Muslims as parents, younger Muslims as children, and peers as brothers. The advice given by the Imām to Zuhry emphasizes building lasting friendships through humility and respect. The Imām warns against Shayṭān's trap of feeling spiritually superior to others.Practical ways to cultivate humility: a younger person has had fewer opportunities to sin, an older person has had more opportunities for good deeds, and one's own faults are better known than another's.Imām Sajjād (a) witnessing the tragedy of Karbala while being forced to leave without burying Imām Husayn (a).Lady Zaynab (a) consoles Imām Sajjād (a) with the prophecy that the shrine of Imām Husayn (a) would become a place visited by countless believers. The majlis concludes by remembering the unparalleled tragedy of Karbala: "Lā Yawma Ka Yawmika Yā Abā ʿAbdillāh."Donate towards our programs today: https://jaffari.org/donate/Jaffari Community Centre (JCC Live)

The True Purpose Of Mourning Imam Husayn (AS) - Maulana Sayyid Muhammad Rizvi

Friday Juma KhutbaFriday July 3rd, 202617th Muharram 1448 AHMuharram gatherings commemorate the supreme sacrifice of Imam Husayn (a) and strengthen faith, knowledge, and personal reform.Imam Husayn's sacrifice was entirely for preserving the pure message of Allah. The Prophet (s) described Imam Husayn (a) as the adornment of the heavens and the earth.A famous hadith describes Imam Husayn (a) as "Misbah al-Huda wa Safinat al-Najat" (The Lamp of Guidance and the Ark of Salvation).Imam Husayn (a) continues to guide believers centuries after Karbala through his timeless message.Throughout history, Shia communities around the world have united and established themselves through the remembrance ('aza) of Imam Husayn (a).The growth of Shia centres in Australia demonstrates how Muharram commemorations build and strengthen communities.Emotional attachment to Imam Husayn (a), his family, and his companions serves as the foundation for preserving Islamic identity.Organizers, speakers, and attendees have a responsibility to ensure Muharram gatherings increase faith, knowledge, and righteous conduct.Imam Husayn (a) declared that his movement was never for political power or worldly gain. The objectives of Karbala were to revive the signs of Allah's religion, establish reform, protect the oppressed, and implement divine commandments. The purpose of mourning Imam Husayn (a) should always reflect the objectives of his uprising.Muharram should inspire believers to understand the authentic sources of Islam. The legacy of Imam Husayn (a) calls Muslims to work toward justice, social reform, and peaceful communities.True devotion to Imam Husayn (a) is demonstrated by living according to Allah's commandments and making the Ahlul Bayt (a) proud through one's character.Donate towards our programs today: https://jaffari.org/donate/Jaffari Community Centre (JCC Live)
