Becoming a Disciple Maker (an interview with Kandi Gallaty)

from Ministry Wives Podcast · host North American Mission Board

Jesus called us to go and make disciples of all the nations, but how do we as ministry wives put that call into action? How do we come alongside other women, walking with Jesus and doing life together? Kandi Gallaty provides valuable insight into the importance of meditating on the Word, listening to the Spirit and committing ourselves to one another on this holy journey of discipleship. Kandi Gallaty is an author, speaker, pastor’s wife, and boy mom. She and her husband have been serving the Lord in full time ministry for the past 18 years and currently live outside Nashville, TN. Kandi joins me today to discuss being a disciple of Christ and making disciples for Christ. EPISODE GUIDE 1. Commit to living as a true disciple of Christ. Get alone with Jesus everyday: find a cozy little nook and get in the Word. Jesus has something to say to you. Listen and His Spirit will speak. When you fill yourself with Christ, investing in others will be the natural effect of that commitment. “I always encourage others that you can’t make disciples if you’re not living as a disciple yourself. When God called us to salvation, it was a call to be a disciple. It was a call for the rest of our life to follow after Him and continuously be transformed into His image. So I try to live my life in private when nobody’s watching the exact same way I’m going to live it in public with girls that I disciple.” — Kandi Gallaty “That’s where it starts. Live as a disciple of Jesus Christ and as you do that, as you read the Word daily and practice spiritual disciplines, you will not be able to help but invest in others.” — Kandi Gallaty 2. Commit to the women in your group. Clearly lay out all expectations of the group before you begin. You aren’t just a leader. As you pour into the women, they will pour into you. Model the transparency and authenticity you desire in the group. “All the expectations are laid out, because if I’m putting my heart and soul into this, I want the same from them. The thing about a discipleship group is that it functions as a unit. I’m not just the discipler and they’re the disciples. Even though they’re going to look to me to really pour [into] and invest in them, I am looking to them too. What God shares and speaks to them throughout the week is going to minister to me as well. We’re committing and signing a covenant to the Lord first, but then to one another.” — Kandi Gallaty 3. Issues may arise. Seek God’s wisdom on how to navigate them. If someone is struggling to stay committed, rally around them. Confronting habitual sin requires the same gentleness with authority and love that Jesus utilized. When conversations need to be had, do so privately and ask the Lord to help you shepherd. “I would encourage you to be sensitive to the Spirit as you’re praying for the ladies in your group and be obedient to what God calls you to do as a leader. He will speak and lead you as the leader, so listen if there needs to be conversations had with members in the group.” — Kandi Gallaty LINKS FROM THE SHOW Head over to www.ministrywivespodcast.com to check out the great content already on the site!
