Hace setenta millones de años, a finales del Cretácico, Madagascar ya era una isla, que se había separado unos millones de años antes de África y de la India. En el noroeste de Madagascar, el clima era cálido y árido, con largas estaciones secas y escasas lluvias. Tortugas, serpientes, lagartos, cocodrilos, dinosaurios y aves vivían en la región. También vivía allí el sapo más grande conocido: Beelzebufo ampinga. Beelzebufo mide cuarenta centímetros de longitud y su peso se estima en unos cuatro kilos y medio. Los primeros fósiles de Beelzebufo fueron descubiertos en 1993 por el paleontólogo David Krause, de la Universidad Estatal de Nueva York en Stony Brook, en la Formación Maevarano, un yacimiento situado en la provincia de Mahajanga, en el noroeste de Madagascar.
