Being Seen Without Giving Yourself Away

from ShelbyRADIO · host Shelby Carino

In this episode of ShelbyRADIO, I'm talking about something I didn't realize I was still working through: being seen again without giving myself away. I've been showing up more on social media, sharing my life, creating reels, rebuilding my business, and putting my voice back into the world. From the outside, it probably doesn't look like I have a problem being seen. But this week I realized there's a difference between visibility and accessibility. Two comments on social media brought an old pattern right to the surface. One pulled me into an exchange that left me feeling completely knocked out of my own energy. The other gave me the opportunity to do something very different: say nothing. And that silence taught me a lot. I'm taking you back to some of my experiences building my business and online community beginning around 2017, when I learned some incredibly painful lessons about trust, boundaries, giving away my power, and what can happen when we mistake sharing our light for giving everyone access to it. I also talk about the temptation to turn negative comments into content because controversy gets views, engagement, and attention—and why I'm realizing that simply isn't the kind of online space I want to build. This season of showing up again isn't about defending myself, convincing people to understand me, or becoming a keyboard warrior. It's about learning that I can be seen without being consumed. I can be misunderstood without correcting the misunderstanding. And someone else's judgment does not require my participation. Maybe protecting your energy isn't about closing yourself off from the world. Maybe it's learning how to open the doors without letting everyone inside. 🎧 In this episode: The difference between being visible and being accessible Why social media engagement has brought up old wounds for me What two very different comments taught me this week How I used to unknowingly give my power away Why I'm no longer interested in defending myself online Choosing authenticity over drama—even when drama gets more views Learning to hold your light without needing to defend it I no longer need to defend my light. I need to hold it. Come Back to Yourself Here
