Betrayed and Hunted: David’s Flight to Nob & The Arrest of Jesus (Day 148)

from The Bible in a Year Podcast with Scott Purcell

Where is God when you are cornered by betrayal? Today’s reading takes us deep into the pain of exile and arrest. In 1 Samuel, David is running for his life. Desperate and hungry, he stops at the holy city of Nob for bread and weapons, unwittingly setting off a horrific chain of events when Saul’s spy, Doeg the Edomite, reports the priests. We watch David move from cave to cave, building an army out of the broken and distressed while Saul’s madness grows. In the Gospel of John, the ultimate betrayal unfolds. Jesus steps into a dark olive grove across the Kidron Valley, where Judas arrives with a band of soldiers. Rather than hiding or fleeing like David, Jesus steps forward with absolute majesty, declaring "I Am He" with a voice so powerful it knocks His captors to the ground, willingly trading His freedom to ensure His disciples go free.Today’s Scripture:📖 1 Samuel 21–23 – David flees to Nob, where Ahimelech the priest gives him the holy showbread and the sword of Goliath. David hides in the Cave of Adullam, gathering 400 distressed and indebted men. Madness consumes Saul, who orders Doeg the Edomite to slaughter 85 priests at Nob for helping David. David rescues the city of Keilah from Philistines but must flee again when the townspeople plot to hand him over to Saul. The reading ends with Jonathan finding David in the wilderness to encourage him, right before God uses a surprise Philistine raid to call Saul away from cornering David.📖 John 18:1–24 – Jesus enters a garden where Judas betrays Him. When Jesus says "I am he," the soldiers draw back and fall to the ground. Peter draws a sword and cuts off Malchus's ear, but Jesus rebukes him, declaring, "Shall I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?" Jesus is bound and led away to Annas, the former high priest, while Peter follows at a distance, setting up his first tragic denial by a courtyard fire.📖 Proverbs 13:10–19 – Wisdom for maintaining our character under fire: "By insolence comes nothing but strife, but with those who take advice is wisdom." Solomon reminds us that wealth gained hastily dwindles, that "hope deferred makes the heart sick," and that a desire fulfilled is sweet to the soul.RESOURCES & READ-ALONG📺 Watch on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLYKi8-_5xHGL_nFAZOthHtZhcb4CqW4ZF📖 Follow the Text (LEB): https://biblia.com/books/leb/🗓️ Download the Full Plan: https://www.biblica.com/resources/reading-plans/CONNECT & SUPPORT📧 Questions?
