公元747年，也就是唐玄宗天宝六年的春天，吏部尚书房琯被贬出朝庭，他的门客—--著名琴师董庭兰自然也离开了长安。这一年的冬天，董庭兰和高适在睢阳相逢，高适写下了《别董大二首》。这时期的高适也很不得志，到处流浪，经常拿不出酒钱，生活穷困潦倒。可是写的《别董大》却激昂慷慨，鼓舞人心。
