Biology Exam - Foundation 2 - You Can Nut In The Background

from Lexx Education · host lexxeducation

Welcome back to part 2 of the biology exam... the bit where all the wheels start to come off, roll through dog poop and then hit the spectators in the head! It starts back with malaria is a protist and into a new section. They immediately have a disagreement about whether or not Laura should be befriending rats. A word of warning - Ron is enthusiastically eating pistachios and then cleaning up his own pistachio mess during the beginning of this episode so sorry to everyone who hates all the messy noises that surround our speaking. You really start to hear Laura’s frustration brimming into giddiness around the 16 minutes mark (of the exam - not the whole episode). She gets a bit whiny and groany. Laura then joins in on eating the pistachios. At around the 18 minute mark (of the exam - not the whole episode) you might want to just take your headphones out for a while. And when we see a while... we mean until the end of the exam. It is the most eating noises experience on planet earth. We hope you still love us after this. It's the comedy science podcast where comedian Laura Lexx tries to learn science from her non-comedian, super nerd brother Ron. This week, we dive into the second half of the biology exam, and it’s a wild ride from start to finish. Laura and Ron are in the same room, and the episode starts with a bit of a sticky situation—literally, as Ron's arms are stuck to the table. The dog is chewing on her own leg, and we introduce a new character: Girlfriend of the Podcast. Things get personal as they discuss the timeline of Ron's relationship, but they quickly move on to the science. We start with a question about malaria and end up in a deep discussion about mosquito vectors, eukaryotic cells, and prokaryotic organisms. Laura tries her best to answer the questions, but there are a few moments where she feels like she's flailing. Ron provides some guidance, but not without a few laughs and some frustration. One of the highlights is when Laura describes the malarial protist and its features. She struggles with terms like "bayou area" and "nucleus" but eventually gets there. The episode is filled with tangents, including a discussion about feeding rats and the dangers of Vile's disease. The episode also features a particularly challenging question about the effect of pH on the rate of starch breakdown by amylase. Laura gives it her best shot, but it's clear that this is a tough one. Ron helps her through it, but not without some playful banter and a few more nuts being eaten in the background. As the episode progresses, Laura tackles questions about the human heart, coronary arteries, and the effects of blocked arteries. She also discusses the importance of clinical trials and the validity of online reports about new drugs. The episode wraps up with some business ideas from Ron, including bougie baby cupboard locks, pine nut butter, and a shoe subscription service. Laura is skeptical but intrigued, and they both have a good laugh about the feasibility of these ideas. Overall, this episode is a rollercoaster of emotions, from frustration to laughter, with plenty of science in between. Tune in to see if Laura can pass the biology exam and what new business ventures Ron might come up with next! 00:00:00 " This is another episode of Lex Education, the comedy science podcast 00:01:02 " We're getting into the breakup timeline on the podcast, aren't we 00:02:35 " This episode is so bad that Ron and I declared a no eating rule 00:07:31 " The protest is passed from one person to another person by mosquitoes 00:11:31 " How many chromosomes will each new protist cell have after mitosis 00:16:00 " Use mosquito nets to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes, Laura says 00:17:19 " Students studied how having disorder s interacts with malaria 00:18:49 " Give one reason why a person needs new body cells with ageing 00:20:07 " Characteristics of enzymes are linked to their function 00:24:23 " A student investigated the effect of ph on the rate of starch breakdown 00:27:03 " We're investigating the effect of ph on the rate of starch breakdown 00:30:18 " Name the type of tissue in plants that contains stem cells 00:36:17 " Chlorosis means you're not producing enough chlorophyll 00:40:02 " There are many online reports making claims about the effects of chemical a 00:40:52 " This question is about the circulatory system.
