She went on to be an outspoken preacher of the Gospel and activist for the abolition of slavery, freedmen and women’s rights. Sojourner Truth was the first African-American woman to have a sculpture in Emancipation Hall in the U.S. Capitol Building. She was designated one of the 100 most significant Americans of all time by the Smithsonian Magazine in 2014.
