Bön is neither lost nor forgotten—it endures, whispering stories of kingdoms vanished and teachers barely touched by time. But where does myth leave off and history begin?Long before Buddhism swept across Tibet, Bön was already weaving its rituals through the valleys and peaks. It is an indigenous faith that names its birthplace in Zhang-zhung, an ancient kingdom in what is now western Tibet. According to Bön tradition, the founder Tonpa Shenrab Miwoche emerged from a mysterious land called Tagzig or Olmo Lun. His deeds and teachings, followers say, set the foundation for all of Bön—teachings carried into Tibet before any Buddhist scripture arrived.
