Born Again & The Witness of the Altar: Joshua 21–22 and John 3 (Day 122)

What does it mean to truly belong to God? Today in the Gospel of John, we eavesdrop on a late-night conversation between Jesus and a Pharisee named Nicodemus. Jesus delivers the radical news that spiritual heritage isn't enough—we must be "born again" to see the Kingdom of God. In the Old Testament, the conquest concludes with a beautiful summary of God's faithfulness: "Not one word of all the good promises that the Lord had made to the house of Israel had failed." However, tension immediately arises as the eastern tribes return home and build a massive altar, causing the rest of Israel to fear a rebellion.Today’s Scripture:📖 Joshua 21:20–22:34 – We finish the list of Levite cities, highlighting that God provided for the ministers of the law in every region. The tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh are released to go back across the Jordan. When they build a large altar of "witness," the other tribes prepare for war, only to discover that it was built out of a desire for unity, not division.📖 John 3:1–21 – Jesus explains the mystery of the new birth to Nicodemus, using the Old Testament imagery of the bronze serpent in the wilderness. This section contains John 3:16, the core of the Gospel message: God’s sacrificial love for the world through His Son.📖 Psalm 55:1–11 – A heavy lament from David as he faces betrayal from a friend.
