However, instead of taking the sequel route, they decided to go make a prequel that would explain how Leatherface and his family became the way they are. The resulting film was released in 2006 as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, which was directed by Jonathan Liebesman (Darkness Falls, Battle Los Angelis) and written by Sheldon Turner (The Longest Yard '05, Up In The Air) from a story co-wrote by David J.
