BUDGET CUTS REDUCE REFORM EFFORTS; CLEAN SLATE CAMPAIGN WORKS TO INSURE INCARCERATION IS OVER ONCE SENTENCE IS SERVED

from Jaws of Justice Radio · host KKFI Community Podcasts

Jaws of Justice Radio investigates how we can achieve justice from a system of laws deeply rooted in economic, social and political inequality.  We want to dispel misconceptions created by the news and entertainment industry, politicians and our educational system. We hope you will listen. We open the hour and hear host Terri Wilke speaking with guests about the American Mustang Project, which partners with Henry Merrill Horsemanship to provide a solid foundation for creating self-regulating, confident horses through nonviolent, non-fear-based methods. They rescue wild Mustang horses to gentle and train them for adoption and community education. Kansas Department of Corrections has allowed the U.S. Bureau of Land Management to operate a Wild Horse program at the Hutchinson Correctional Facility.  The very successful Wild Horse and Burro Inmate Training Program will be shut down by the end of February due to federal budget cuts. This program in Hutchinson, KS, as well as several other prisons throughout the country, will feel the loss. The program allows prisoners the responsibility to care for, train, and tame wild horses, getting them ready for adoption across the country. The program has provided prisoners a renewed sense of responsibility with reduced recidivism and has enabled many successful wild horse adoptions. https://www.americanmustangproject.org/ The American Mustang Project announces a Valentines Fundraiser Saturday, February 14th, 2-5 PM at Saddle and Sirloin Club 14401 Holmes RD, Kansas City, MO. The event will feature horsemanship and mustang demonstrations, live music from the Noah Earle Band, and unlimited food and beverages. Tickets are available and all funds go to this important and urgent cause. The Valentines Fundraiser is needed to rescue wild mustangs left displaced after Hutchinson Correctional Facility Wild Horse program shuts down. American Mustang Project, based in MO, is working with organizations to rescue nearly 200 mustangs which will be left without a home by the end of February, 2026. During the second half of our hour, host Bev Livingston will speak with Sandra Kay Keely, a justice reform strategist and nonprofit executive based in St. Louis, MO who is advancing clean slate policy, expungement access, and scalable justice infrastructure in Missouri. As an ambassador for Clean Slate Missouri and the REFORM Alliance, her work bridges community expungement clinics, legislative advocacy, and technology to eliminate the collateral consequences of a criminal record. Sandra Kay Keely is Executive Director of 3 Daughters and 1000 Sons, a non-profit St. Louis organization which champions meaningful criminal justice reform and community empowerment.  Their initiatives focus on rehabilitation, education, and support, driving systemic change and fostering safer, more equitable communities. Their mission is to transform lives, uplift families, and redefine justice for a brighter future. https://3daughtersand1000sons.org/ "Blood Ties Bind and Community Ties, too." Bev and Sandy will speak about the Clean Slate Missouri campaign.  Today, over 1.9 million Missourians from all walks of life face barriers to jobs, education, housing and other basic necessities because they have an arrest or conviction on their record. On Jaws of Justice, we examine how to find justice in our society.  Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are.
