LENS OF A LAWYER with DAVID BELL: PROF. SHELDON EVANS – WHY DO WE PUNISH?
Jaws of Justice Radio investigates how we can achieve justice from a system of laws deeply rooted in economic, social and political inequality. We want to dispel misconceptions created by the news and entertainment industry, politicians and our educational system. We hope you will listen. Jaws of Justice will play the July 31, 2026 Lens of a Lawyer podcast produced by David Bell, “What is the true purpose of prison?” Sentencing sits at the absolute center of criminal justice, sparking fierce debate from every angle - whether it’s public outrage over lenient terms or the devastating, unintended consequences of mandatory minimums. In this episode, David sits down with Professor Sheldon Evans of Washington University in St. Louis, a leading expert on punishment theory, to break down the historical, social, and philosophical forces that dictate how we punish crime. Lens of a Lawyer is a legal podcast hosted by criminal defense attorney David Bell. The show explores how the justice system reflects societal values, struggles, and culture by featuring interviews with legal experts, activists, and community leaders. David asks his guests to look beyond basic laws and procedures to see the legal system as a mirror of society. David Bell believes the justice system is more than a set of laws and procedures - it’s a mirror reflecting the values, struggles, and complexities of our society. In Lens of Lawyer, David will sit down with guests from all walks of life - legal experts, survivors, activists, and thought leaders - to explore how real-world issues play out in and beyond the courtroom. With empathy, insight, and honesty, each episode peels back the layers of the legal system to reveal what it says about who we are - and who we want to become. On Jaws of Justice, we examine how to find justice in our society. Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are.

JEREMIAH BARBER VIEWS JUSTICE, HEALING AND COMMUNITY; MELVIN MERRITT TELLS US ABOUT PENNY MILL
Jaws of Justice Radio investigates how we can achieve justice from a system of laws deeply rooted in economic, social and political inequality. We want to dispel misconceptions created by the news and entertainment industry, politicians and our educational system. We hope you will listen. On July 20th, 2026, our hour opens with host Bev Livingston speaking with her guest Jeremiah L. Barber, a Kansas City, Missouri cowboy who has spent years balancing the grit of the arena with the heavy realities of the justice system. For over six years he has worked on the front lines of corrections, navigating high-stress environments across the Kansas City Police Department, the Jackson County Detention Center, and the Missouri Department of Corrections. To truly understand the mechanics behind the walls, he also studied Criminal Justice at Metropolitan Community College’s Longview campus. But his time in uniform wasn't just a job - it was a deeply eye-opening experience. As a Black man working in these facilities, it was incredibly tough to face the daily reality that roughly 70% of the incarcerated population were also Black men. Bearing witness to that systemic cycle firsthand left a lasting impact on how Jeremiah L. Barber views justice, healing, and community. Today, he has traded the steel doors for the open pasture and he finds peace and purpose alongside his four horses. After years of carrying the weight and stress of correctional work, working with these animals has become his way of healing and staying grounded. During the second half of our hour, host Terri Wilke will speak with Melvin Merritt, Founder, about Penny Mill. The Penny Mill Foundation is a Kansas City, Missouri based non-profit dedicated to empowering communities and bringing different ethnic and social groups together. Penny Mill regularly hosts free, large-scale community events in the area. Penny Mill’s Community Empowerment Event is back this summer bringing fun and community building to the East side. The event in Blue Valley Park, 23rd and Topping, Kansas City MO features food and entertainment from 10 AM – 4 PM. Please tune in to hear about it! On Jaws of Justice, we examine how to find justice in our society. Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are.

TALK ABOUT A REVOLUTION – NO MORE NUKES, NO MORE WRONGFUL CONVICTIONS
Jaws of Justice Radio investigates how we can achieve justice from a system of laws deeply rooted in economic, social and political inequality. We want to dispel misconceptions created by the news and entertainment industry, politicians and our educational system. We hope you will listen. On July 6th, 2026, our hour opens with guest Casey Carter, Director of the award-winning nuclear waste documentary film, To Use a Mountain. As regional communities confront new nuclear projects, weapons production, and questions of public consent, Casey Carter is coming to showings of the film on July 11th in Parsons, Kansas and July 12th in Kansas City, Missouri. https://www.touseamountain.com/ Southeast Kansas and Kansas City face separate but connected nuclear flashpoints amid a broader federal push to accelerate nuclear energy and weapons programs. In Parsons, Deep Fission has proposed an underground nuclear reactor pilot project at Great Plains Industrial Park, promoted in part as an energy solution for data centers and other large power users, raising community concerns about safety, oversight, waste, and public consent. In Kansas City, organizers are challenging the city’s role in the nuclear weapons complex, including the Kansas City National Security Campus and the broader push to modernize the U.S. nuclear arsenal. More than 90,000 metric tons of commercial spent nuclear fuel remain stored across the United States, with no permanent geologic repository in operation, and the amount growing by roughly 2,000 metric tons each year. What happens when national nuclear ambitions become local responsibilities that communities are asked to accept? Casey Carter will speak a few minutes about where to see the film. Next, host Terri Wilke will speak with Valena Beety, a wrongful convictions litigator and former US federal prosecutor. Beety is the McKinney Professor of Law at Indiana University and co-founder of the Indiana Innocence Project. She is also author of a forthcoming book Pink Crime: Fighting Against the Criminalization of Motherhood, Pregnancy, and Queer Identity. Her book exposes how junk science, false confessions, faulty forensic evidence, and gender stereotypes are leading to no-crime wrongful convictions for women and LGBTQ+ people. The cases she explores are chilling: women prosecuted after miscarriages and stillbirths, mothers losing custody based on hospital-administered drugs, and LGBTQ+ people sentenced to decades in prison for crimes that never occurred. Beety draws on her litigation experience and interviews with leaders across the Innocence Movement to connect today’s prosecutions to a long history of criminalizing women and LGBTQ+ communities based on identity. https://thenewpress.org/books/pink-crime/ On Jaws of Justice, we examine how to find justice in our society. HUMANS CAN BE AGGRESSIVE AND VIOLENT AND PEACEFUL AND COOPERATIVE ALL AT THE SAME TIME; ARGUING FOR A STATE OF COOPERATION
Jaws of Justice Radio investigates how we can achieve justice from a system of laws deeply rooted in economic, social and political inequality. We want to dispel misconceptions created by the news and entertainment industry, politicians and our educational system. We hope you will listen. For June 22, 2026, we play an April, 2026 broadcast of Final Straw Radio. This episode features an interview with Dr. Terence Keel about U.S. Deaths in Custody and Public Accountability. Dr. Terence Keel is a Professor of Human Biology & Society and African American Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles. He is also author of Divine Variations: How Christian Thought Became Racial Science and The Coroner's Silence: Death Records and the Hidden Victims of Police Violence. He created the UCLA BioCritical Studies (BCS) Lab in 2020, an interdisciplinary space that investigates the complex interactions between human biology and society. https://thefinalstrawradio.noblogs.org/about/ The Final Straw is a weekly anarchist and anti-authoritarian radio show bringing you voices and ideas from struggle around the world. Since 2010, they have been broadcasting from occupied Tsalagi land on 103.3 FM in Asheville, NC. Amar Bursts is co-host and producer; Ian Bursts is co-host. https://thefinalstrawradio.noblogs.org/about/ During the second half of our hour, hosts Terri Wilke and Justice Johnson will talk further about violence involving law enforcement. Humans are violent due to a complex interplay of evolutionary instincts, biological factors, and social/environmental influences. While humans are highly cooperative, we possess an inherent capacity for aggression. Primal “fight or flight” instincts still exist, even when the threats are social rather than physical. A lack of the neurotransmitter serotonin can impair the brain's ability to inhibit impulsive or aggressive reactions. Studies show that it is significantly easier for individuals to commit violent acts when there is physical or emotional distance from the victim. Aggression is heavily influenced by a person's environment. Individuals who grow up exposed to abuse, conflict, or violence in their communities are much more likely to exhibit and pass on those behaviors. Our success as a species relies overwhelmingly on empathy, reason, and cooperation. Society has historically mitigated our violent tendencies through laws, institutions, and cultural norms that encourage negotiation over conflict. On Jaws of Justice, we examine how to find justice in our society. Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are.

JAIL BILL OF RIGHTS
Jaws of Justice Radio investigates how we can achieve justice from a system of laws deeply rooted in economic, social and political inequality. We want to dispel misconceptions created by the news and entertainment industry, politicians and our educational system. We hope you will listen. Host Bev Livingston speaks with her guest, Lora McDonald, Executive Director of Metro Organization for Racial and Economic Equity, better known as “MORE Squared”. Lora McDonald has served as a social worker in metropolitan Kansas City for three decades. In her early career, she worked in a Missouri state prison; licensed foster and adoptive families; and served youth who were street homeless. McDonald’s career evolved to developing and implementing programs, ranging from crisis intervention with adoptive families to creating community gardens; more recently, McDonald was the architect of the Second Chance Program for people returning from incarceration. While designing Second Chance, she would organize the Kansas City Metropolitan Reentry Coalition in order to address policies that impeded the success of people with criminal histories. Around the same time, she was introduced to MORE2 and the National Leadership Training from the Gamaliel Network. She has been Ex. Dir of More² since 2012, and during that time, the organization has won many victories, expanded into Kansas, and sustained a significant ongoing public presence through a myriad of issues. Lora McDonald was the lead organizer who beat back a plan to collapse KCPS for an all-charter school model; she wrote the bill and led statewide organizing to win food stamps for people with drug convictions; and drove the campaign that established the first tenant’s rights in Kansas City, Missouri with the passage of Healthy Homes. MORE2 is recognized as one of the leading organizations for police reform in the metro, specifically focused on accountability and transparency in Kansas City, Kansas, and local control of Kansas City Police Department. Bev and Lora will talk about the More² Gubernatorial Forum, Voting Rights for Formerly Incarcerated people and on June 2nd, a Jail Bill of Rights coming up before the legislature in Jackson County for a final vote. Then, Host Keith Brown El will talk with our NEW Host, Justice Johnson, about jails in Jackson County MO and Kansas City MO as we try to keep listeners informed of the changes being made in our local incarceration system. On Jaws of Justice, we examine how to find justice in our society. Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are.

THE REWARDING WORK OF PRISON MINISTRY and NEWS ABOUT INCARCERATION IN KC AND JACKSON CTY, MO
Jaws of Justice Radio investigates how we can achieve justice from a system of laws deeply rooted in economic, social and political inequality. We want to dispel misconceptions created by the news and entertainment industry, politicians and our educational system. We hope you will listen. Host Bev Livingston opens our hour speaking with Bishop Saundra McFadden-Weaver. They are going to tell listeners about Prison Ministry, feeding homeless people and proving the support which benefit reentry and impacted persons as they transition from incarceration to a very different life. Life in prison is defined by a severe lack of personal choices. For example, while held by law enforcement, a person has no choice of the company they share their life. A person’s name and choices is stripped away. Life outside, or "reentry," challenges formerly incarcerated individuals with the heavy stigma of a criminal record which can restrict access to jobs, housing, and civic participation. Many return to distressed communities, making successful social integration difficult. Bishop Saundra McFadden-Weaver was born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri, graduating from Lincoln High School, then moving on to higher learning she holds a B.S in Agricultural Science, a Masters in Theological Studies, and a Doctorate in Pastoral Theology. Bishop McFadden-Weaver has been Councilwoman of Kansas City, MO 3rd District, Missouri Victims Advocate for Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), served in Prison Ministries, headed the call to regulate Bounty Hunters and saw to it that change came to the Federal Laws governing Bounty Hunters. She has stood with Ad Hoc Against Crime, championed victims’ rights, sat in for civil rights, and fought for women’s rights. She has served as the proud pastor of Community Fellowship of Jesus Christ for more than 20 years and is looking forward to many more. In the second part of our hour, Jaws of Justice host, Terri Wilke, and a new volunteer, Justice Johnson, will talk about the status of the Kansas City Missouri jail and the Jackson County jail. Listeners are aware that new jails are being built, staffed and filled. The community needs to be aware of the what is planned and consider how the job can best be accomplished. After all, we are paying for it. On Jaws of Justice, we examine how to find justice in our society. Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are.

FLASHPOINTS ON TRUMP ISSUES; CHRISTOPHER STANDISH IS LOCKED UP ABROAD
Jaws of Justice Radio investigates how we can achieve justice from a system of laws deeply rooted in economic, social and political inequality. We want to dispel misconceptions created by the news and entertainment industry, politicians and our educational system. We hope you will listen. We open our hour and hear a recent Flashpoints Newsmagazine produced by Mike “Biggz” McKenna about the Trump administrations attacks on workers’ rights, women’s rights and equality with Jessica Ramey Stender, the Policy Director with Equal Rights Advocates. Flashpoints Daily Newsmagazine is produced at WPFA, Berkeley, CA and is produced by Dennis Bernstein. In the second part of our hour, Jaws of Justice host, Terri Wilke, and Justice Johnson will talk with their guest, Christopher Standish, CEO and Founder of Standish913, about a new documentary he is producing, “Locked Up Abroad, Are We in Jail?”, a romance to remand experience. In July of 2025, Christopher was romantically involved with a woman who lived in Canada and he flew to visit her. Christoper is legally blind. Imagine his surprise when he landed in the Edmonton Remand Centre where he was held for 56 days because of her false complaint that he had possession of her smart phone. The Edmonton Remand Centre is a large provincial pre-trial detention facility in Alberta, Canada, designed to house individuals awaiting trial or sentencing. Opened in 2013, it is one of Canada's largest, with a capacity for 1,952 inmates, and operates solely through video visitation rather than in-person visits. Christopher will talk with us about his experience being held without cause, without sight and by a government that was in argument with the Trump Administration at that time and which may have wanted to establish its authority. UPDATE ON LARRY’S LAW FROM MARIA MILLER; CHRIS GILYARD TALKS ABOUT LIFE IN PRISON
Jaws of Justice Radio investigates how we can achieve justice from a system of laws deeply rooted in economic, social and political inequality. We want to dispel misconceptions created by the news and entertainment industry, politicians and our educational system. We hope you will listen. Host Bev Livingston speaks with Maria Miller about Larry’s Law. Maria is a CURE member St Louis, Missouri. She has spent more than a decade seeking answers after her brother died in state prison and is now advocating for legislation that would create an independent oversight agency for the Missouri Department of Corrections. Two Missouri House bills, HB 2832 and HB 1616, and a companion bill in the Missouri Senate known as “Larry’s Law” would establish independent oversight of the Missouri Department of Corrections. The proposed independent agency would monitor prison conditions, track compliance, establish a reporting system to collect data, and issue annual reports about the department. The bills are currently in the House Corrections Committee, where there was a hearing in early 2026. The bills are supported by advocates for improved prison safety because they would establish a formal system to track data and issue annual reports regarding prison conditions. Maria Miller lost her brother, Larry, more than 12 years ago after he was stabbed in prison. Miller said her family received little information following his death and that the lack of transparency prompted her to advocate for systemic change. The Missouri Department of Corrections has not taken a formal position on the bill. In a statement, a department spokesperson said the agency already has oversight mechanisms in place. The Department of Corrections is one of Missouri’s largest, with a $935 million 2026 budget and more than 10,000 employees. Those mechanisms include an anonymous complaints hotline known as the CLEAR line, an internal investigations unit, an Office of Professional Standards, a grievance system for incarcerated residents, contract monitors for medical and mental health providers, a Constituent Services Office for families and a Sunshine Law unit for public records requests. The department also conducts autopsies for nearly all deaths in custody and provides weekly reporting of all deaths and causes of death. In the second part of our hour, Jaws of Justice will play another talk with Chris Gilyard, resident at the Missouri Crossroads Correctional facility. On Jaws of Justice, we examine how to find justice in our society. Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are. https://kkfi.org/listen/

CINDY COHN TALKS ABOUT HER NEW BOOK ON INTERNET LAW: PRIVACY RIGHTS; GUNS TO GARDENS KANSAS CITY, A SAFE ANONYMOUS FIREARMS DISPOSAL EVENT
Jaws of Justice Radio investigates how we can achieve justice from a system of laws deeply rooted in economic, social and political inequality. We want to dispel misconceptions created by the news and entertainment industry, politicians and our educational system. We hope you will listen. Host Terri Wilke speaks with author Cindy Cohn about her new book, Privacy's Defender, My Thirty-Year Fight Against Digital Surveillance and her work as executive director of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, which is the world’s biggest and oldest digital rights organization. https://www.eff.org/Privacys-Defender Cindy Cohn recounts the fight against sweeping government surveillance after 9/11, her reservations about internet regulations backfiring if placed in the wrong hands, and why the solution to these problems is a combination of comprehensive privacy law, revised business models of giant tech companies who make money off of user data, and more platform choices for individuals. Part memoir and part legal history for the general reader, the book is a compelling testament to just how hard-won the privacy rights we now enjoy as tech users are, and also how crucial these rights are in our efforts to combat authoritarianism, grow democracy, and strengthen other human rights. Cindy Cohn is an American civil liberties attorney specializing in Internet law. She has served as executive director for the Electronic Frontier Foundation since 2015. In the second part of our hour, I will speak with the Rev. Phil Woodson, Pastor, Stilwell United Methodist Church, Stilwell, Kansas and Dianna Heffernon, church member and retired teacher. They will talk about the Saturday, May 2, 2026 event, Guns to Gardens Kansas City, from 1 – 3 PM at the Stilwell United Methodist Church, 19335 Metcalf Ave, Stilwell, KS 66085 This event welcomes everyone who wants an opportunity to dispose of unwanted firearms safely, responsibly, and anonymously. CHRIS GILYARD, RESIDENT OF CROSSROADS CORRECTIONAL FACILITY SPEAKS WITH JAWS OF JUSTICE ON HIS THOUGHTS AND TRUTH; REPRESENTATIVES OF PEACEW
Jaws of Justice Radio investigates how we can achieve justice from a system of laws deeply rooted in economic, social and political inequality. We want to dispel misconceptions created by the news and entertainment industry, politicians and our educational system. We hope you will listen. Host Terri Wilke speaks with Chris Gilyard, a resident of Missouri’s Crossroads Correctional Facility. He shares his thoughts about life before prison and life in prison. Chris has been incarcerated for thirty years and he freely admits he was guilty of the charged crimes and even that he believes he should have been placed in prison at the time. However, what I hear when speaking with Chris Gilyard is a person with interests in life but who is severely limited by the circumstances of the prison routine. Pity we cannot provide services to determine which residents, at any time of their sentence, might be successfully reformed. Pity we warehouse people like animals behind bars for decades. Thankfully, Chris Gilyard has the number for Jaws of Justice and we can allow him to touch an outside world that he knows little about. In the second part of our hour, Terri Wilke will speak with Ann Suellentrop and Henry Stoever, members of Peaceworks KC. They will talk about the April 24-27. 2026 - THIS UPCOMING WEEKEND! - Midwest Catholic Worker Retreat & Resistance, with some persons doing civil resistance early Monday morning, April 27, when workers at the Kansas City National Security Campus arrive for their 6 AM and 7 AM shifts. https://peaceworkskc.org/register-for-retreat-resistance-vs-nuclear-weapon-making-in-kc/ This event welcomes everyone who wants to show resistance to nuclear warfare at the very site where the Kansas City National Security Campus, operated by Honeywell, proposes to build parts for nuclear bombs. Ann and Henry will also talk about the upcoming federal hearing May 7th, 2026 in Kansas City MO about the environmental dangers of having the United States make plutonium pits, the activating core of nuclear weapons. On Jaws of Justice, we examine how to find justice in our society. Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are. https://kkfi.org/listen/

THE BURN LIST: THE CONSEQUENCES OF PRIORITIZING POWER OVER PEOPLE and THE MIDWEST INNOCENCE PROJECT (MIP) IS MARKING A SIGNIFICANT MILESTONE
Jaws of Justice Radio investigates how we can achieve justice from a system of laws deeply rooted in economic, social and political inequality. We want to dispel misconceptions created by the news and entertainment industry, politicians and our educational system. We hope you will listen. Host Terri Wilke will speak with Julie Cruse, a writer, advocate, and former academic working to expose and dismantle abuse in higher education. Cruse has become a leading voice for survivors navigating academic systems that too often protect institutions over people. She is the founder of AcademicAbuse.com, a survivor-led platform that documents abuse of power in universities and provides resources for both faculty and students navigating trauma and seeking justice. Cruse’s advocacy is grounded in the belief that academic abuse is a systemic problem tied to unchecked authority and weak enforcement of Title VII and Title IX protections. Through her work, she connects individual stories to broader labor and social justice issues, showing how abuse is allowed to persist inside institutions tasked with advancing the public good and teaching the next generation. Her book, The Burn List, A Memoir of Abuse from Home to Higher Education is based on the testimonies of survivors. It traces how academic exploitation unfolds over time and why existing reporting mechanisms so often fail. Host Keith Brown El will speak with representatives of the Midwest Innocence Project including Executive Director Tahir Atwater, Board Member and former KC Chiefs and Pro Football Hall of Famer, Will Shields. The Midwest Innocence Project celebrates 25 years of freedom with a Faces of Innocence “Be the Light” Event on April 30th, 2026. The Midwest Innocence Project (MIP) is a not-for-profit dedicated to investigating, litigating, and exonerating wrongfully convicted individuals across five states. They are marking a significant milestone and inviting the community to take part. On Thursday evening, April 30 (7-9 p.m.) MIP will host its Faces of Innocence: Be the Light event at the Midland Theatre, celebrating 25 years in the fight for freedom. With lives still waiting to be restored, this moment calls for action. Tickets and sponsorships are available now at themip.org under “Faces of Innocence 2026.” Faces of Innocence is MIP’s signature annual fundraiser—and this year’s event carries added urgency. The evening will spotlight the real impact of MIP’s work: bringing innocent people home, advancing ongoing cases, and accelerating efforts to free those still wrongfully convicted. Guests will engage with immersive experiences and interactive exhibits that bring these stories to life. A Golden Ticket Raffle offers the chance to win one of three dream vacation packages, while drinks and hors d’oeuvres will be served throughout the evening. Attendees will also hear a powerful musical performance by MIP client Faye Jacobs, who was released after 26 years of incarceration; MIP continues its efforts to have her conviction overturned. Adding to the evening’s significance, Pro Football Hall of Famer and former Kansas City Chiefs lineman Will Shields—a dedicated MIP Board Member—will host an exclusive Golden Hour Reception for sponsors. Held in the Midland’s Chandelier Bar, this intimate pre-event gathering offers a unique opportunity to connect directly with Shields and support a cause where time truly matters. BUDGET CUTS REDUCE REFORM EFFORTS; CLEAN SLATE CAMPAIGN WORKS TO INSURE INCARCERATION IS OVER ONCE SENTENCE IS SERVED
Jaws of Justice Radio investigates how we can achieve justice from a system of laws deeply rooted in economic, social and political inequality. We want to dispel misconceptions created by the news and entertainment industry, politicians and our educational system. We hope you will listen. We open the hour and hear host Terri Wilke speaking with guests about the American Mustang Project, which partners with Henry Merrill Horsemanship to provide a solid foundation for creating self-regulating, confident horses through nonviolent, non-fear-based methods. They rescue wild Mustang horses to gentle and train them for adoption and community education. Kansas Department of Corrections has allowed the U.S. Bureau of Land Management to operate a Wild Horse program at the Hutchinson Correctional Facility. The very successful Wild Horse and Burro Inmate Training Program will be shut down by the end of February due to federal budget cuts. This program in Hutchinson, KS, as well as several other prisons throughout the country, will feel the loss. The program allows prisoners the responsibility to care for, train, and tame wild horses, getting them ready for adoption across the country. The program has provided prisoners a renewed sense of responsibility with reduced recidivism and has enabled many successful wild horse adoptions. https://www.americanmustangproject.org/ The American Mustang Project announces a Valentines Fundraiser Saturday, February 14th, 2-5 PM at Saddle and Sirloin Club 14401 Holmes RD, Kansas City, MO. The event will feature horsemanship and mustang demonstrations, live music from the Noah Earle Band, and unlimited food and beverages. Tickets are available and all funds go to this important and urgent cause. The Valentines Fundraiser is needed to rescue wild mustangs left displaced after Hutchinson Correctional Facility Wild Horse program shuts down. American Mustang Project, based in MO, is working with organizations to rescue nearly 200 mustangs which will be left without a home by the end of February, 2026. During the second half of our hour, host Bev Livingston will speak with Sandra Kay Keely, a justice reform strategist and nonprofit executive based in St. Louis, MO who is advancing clean slate policy, expungement access, and scalable justice infrastructure in Missouri. As an ambassador for Clean Slate Missouri and the REFORM Alliance, her work bridges community expungement clinics, legislative advocacy, and technology to eliminate the collateral consequences of a criminal record. Sandra Kay Keely is Executive Director of 3 Daughters and 1000 Sons, a non-profit St. Louis organization which champions meaningful criminal justice reform and community empowerment. Their initiatives focus on rehabilitation, education, and support, driving systemic change and fostering safer, more equitable communities. Their mission is to transform lives, uplift families, and redefine justice for a brighter future. https://3daughtersand1000sons.org/ "Blood Ties Bind and Community Ties, too." Bev and Sandy will speak about the Clean Slate Missouri campaign. Today, over 1.9 million Missourians from all walks of life face barriers to jobs, education, housing and other basic necessities because they have an arrest or conviction on their record. On Jaws of Justice, we examine how to find justice in our society. Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are.

MESSAGE FROM A CORRECTIONAL FACILITY RESIDENT; HOST CRAIG LUBOW SPEAKS WITH ML SMITH, FOUNDER OF MISSOURI JUSTICE COALITION
Jaws of Justice Radio investigates how we can achieve justice from a system of laws deeply rooted in economic, social and political inequality. We want to dispel misconceptions created by the news and entertainment industry, politicians and our educational system. We hope you will listen. Jaws of Justice will broadcast another conversation from Chris Gilyard, a resident of Missouri Crossroads Correctional Facility, who will share his opinion about life, mistakes and corrections. Crossroads Correctional Center is located in Cameron, Missouri. Chris reached out to Jaws of Justice. He was interviewed using the telephone. In the second half of our hour, host Craig Lubow will speak with ML Smith, Founder of Missouri Justice Coalition. https://mojustice.org/ MoJustice is dedicated to serving as a unifying force across the state of Missouri, bringing together individuals impacted by the criminal punishment system. Their mission is to educate, empower, and unite community members, transforming them into a powerful advocacy base. Through collaborative efforts, MoJustice strives to drive meaningful reforms within the Missouri prison system, addressing the systemic injustices, inhumane conditions, and absence of accountability. They firmly believe that collective amplification and collective action are essential in building a statewide base of effective and sustained prison advocacy. MoJustice envisions a Missouri where the criminal punishment system is characterized by fairness, accountability, compassion, and rehabilitation. Their vision is a future where everyone, regardless of their background, is treated with dignity and humanity within the prison system. Through collective action, they foster a society where rehabilitation and restorative justice are at the forefront, ultimately creating a safer, more inclusive, and equitable Missouri for all its residents. On Jaws of Justice, we examine how to find justice in our society. Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are.

SURVIVING THE AGE OF ICE: IMMIGRATION 101
Thank you for the generous support we received during our recent pledge drive. It keeps us going. Jaws of Justice Radio investigates how we can achieve justice from a system of laws deeply rooted in economic, social and political inequality. We want to dispel misconceptions created by the news and entertainment industry, politicians and our educational system. We hope you will listen. Tune in to hear a recording from the August 19th Solidarity School of Resistance, Immigration 101 presented by Judy Ancel of The Cross Border Network for Justice and Solidarity Cross Border Network, Claire Murphy Shaw of The Asylum Clinic and Karla Juarez of Advocates for Immigrant Rights and Reconciliation (AIRR). The U.S. immigration system is complex and can be difficult to understand. Immigration in the United States is complex and ever-evolving. Explore layered topics like how and whether immigrants can become citizens and what individual protections look like under the law. The Cross Border Network for Justice and Solidarity is a grassroots organization based in Kansas City which recognizes the common interests of working people in the world and builds ties for common action among them. https://www.crossbordernetwork.org/ Luchando por los trabajadores entre fronteras! La Red Transfronteriza para la Justicia y la Solidaridad es una organización de base con sede en Kansas City, que reconoce los intereses comunes de los trabajadores en el mundo y construye vínculos de acción común entre ellos. The Asylum Clinic promotes justice through the delivery of accessible legal services and support that empower underserved immigrants and refugees in The Heartland. https://www.asylumclinickc.org/ Advocates for Immigrant Rights and Reconciliation (AIRR) recognizes and is working tirelessly to keep families together and end the humanitarian crisis our immigrant community is facing on the belief that all people, no matter where they were born, deserve a chance at a safe and dignified life. AIRR is committed to empower and uplift the voices of the immigrant community and provide them with the tools they need to better protect themselves and their families. https://airrkc.org/ Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has recorded its deadliest year since the early 2000s as agency officials push to increase the number of people in its custody. At least 20 people have died in ICE custody so far this year. ICE is also holding nearly 60,000 people in immigration detention, the highest number in several years. Historians note that public opinion on accepting refugees and immigrants has not always been in line with the narrative of open arms. We find it difficult to live up to the promises made in those stories. Nevertheless, a story in which people are killed while in the care of the state points to a complete breakdown of the legal system. This reflects a real-world moral failure of the prison system, where authorities have a responsibility to protect those in their custody. On Jaws of Justice, we examine how to find justice in our society. Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are. https://kkfi.org/listen/

“LENS OF A LAWYER”
Jaws of Justice Radio investigates how we can achieve justice from a system of laws deeply rooted in economic, social and political inequality. We want to dispel misconceptions created by the news and entertainment industry, politicians and our educational system. We hope you will listen. "Lens of a Lawyer" is a podcast series hosted by David Bell that examines the justice system through the human stories and real-world issues behind the law. It features conversations with people who have experienced the legal system, activists, and legal professionals. It aims to reveal the complexities of the justice system and the human stories behind legal issues, focusing on empathy and insight. The podcast explores what the justice system says about society and how real-world issues play out beyond headlines. “Lens of a lawyer” can mean a perspective on life and law from a lawyer's viewpoint, which involves applying their analytical skills, understanding of legal principles, and ability to assess risks and benefits to analyze situations and advocate for clients. A lawyer's "lens" involves using strong analytical skills to break down complex information and identify key legal principles at play. This perspective involves evaluating situations to propose viable solutions, negotiate disputes, and help clients make informed decisions. Lawyers view cases through the lens of their client's best interests, advocating for specific legal interpretations and actions that are most favorable to them. A deep understanding of relevant laws and procedures, enables them to explain legal options, risks, and benefits to their clients. A lawyer's perspective is also grounded in integrity and a commitment to justice, ensuring their actions are both ethical and effective. We begin our broadcast of this series with the episode, Lens of a Lawyer - Erik Hulse - Zen and the Art of Keeping Your Cool. Erik Hulse’s journey is anything but ordinary. He was once a troubled teen and gifted musician; he went on to serve as an undercover cop and eventually became a police captain. But it wasn’t until he discovered Buddhism and mindfulness that he found real peace and purpose. Now a teacher of both, Erik joins David to talk about how crime and legal struggles often stem from a loss of control, and how practices like meditation and self-reflection can help us reclaim it. On Jaws of Justice, we examine how to find justice in our society. Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are. https://kkfi.org/listen/
