BURROUGHS CUTUP ENGINE V4.5 - Example

Burroughs Cut-Up Engine v4.5 — Compositional Synopsis Long-Range Return with Alteration The Burroughs Cut-Up Engine v4.5 is a generative recomposition system developed in Opusmodus for transforming existing multi-part MIDI material into new musical structures. Taking its conceptual point of departure from William S. Burroughs's cut-up procedures, the program treats fragmentation not as an end in itself, but as the beginning of a compositional process. Source material is divided into synchronized fragments so that local harmonic, rhythmic, and contrapuntal relationships can remain intact even as their original chronology is dismantled and reconstructed. Rather than simply randomizing fragments, the engine evaluates and selects material through interacting processes of density, short-term memory, formal trajectory, regional continuity, textural suppression, and controlled rupture. The result occupies a productive space between preservation and disruption: recognizable aspects of the source survive, but their relocation creates new continuities, juxtapositions, and formal implications. The source composition thus becomes a reservoir of latent musical possibilities from which another work can emerge. Version 4.5 extends this approach through long-range memory and formal bridging. Material encountered earlier in a generated composition can influence choices considerably later, not through literal reprise but through the selection of structurally analogous fragments drawn from displaced regions of the source. This produces what I think of as return with alteration: a sense that something has been encountered before even when its precise identity remains elusive. Because the influence of long-range memory is deliberately weak at the beginning and generally becomes more consequential later, the generated work gradually develops a history of its own. In this sense, the composition must acquire a past before it can remember it. Formal bridging complements this memory process by encouraging connections between the source region of the preceding fragment and the destination implied by the larger formal trajectory. At the same time, a controlled rupture mechanism preserves the possibility of discontinuity and unexpected conjunction. The intention is therefore neither seamless development nor arbitrary collage, but a continuously negotiated relationship among coherence, interruption, recollection, and transformation. At its core, The Burroughs Cut-Up Engine v4.5 explores the possibility of composition as archaeology. An existing work is taken apart not simply to destroy its chronology, but to uncover other musical relationships concealed within it. Fragmentation exposes those possibilities; reconstruction gives them another history; memory allows that new history to begin reflecting upon itself. What emerges is not merely a rearrangement of the original composition, but another music latent within the first.
