Episode Description
English traGermain Rukuki, a Burundian human rights defender, has his 32-year prison sentence reduced to 1 year in prison. This is good news for human rights defenders around the world who have campaigned tirelessly for his release for the past four years. Convicted of inter alia endangering state security and attack on the authority of the State, Germain Rukuki works for the Association of Catholic Jurists of Burundi - AJCB and has already worked for the Action des Christians pour l'Abolition de la Torture - ACAT-Burundi, which fights for respect for human dignity in Burundi, and particularly for the abolition of torture and the death penalty. Now that his sentence has been reduced to one year in prison and a fine of 50 000 Burundian francs (approximately US $25), Rukuki is expected to be released shortly. Armel Niyongere,President of ACAT-Burundi, is delighted with the judgement.
