Condamné pour entre autres atteinte à la sécurité de l'État. et atteinte à l'autorité de l'État , Germain Rukuki travaille pour l'Association des juristes catholiques du Burundi - AJCB et a déjà travaillé pour l'Action des chrétiens pour l'abolition de la torture - ACAT-Burundi, qui lutte pour le respect de la dignité humaine au Burundi, et particulièrement pour l'abolition de la torture et de la peine de mort. Maintenant que sa peine a été ramenée à un an d'emprisonnement et une amende de 50 000 francs burundais (environ 25 dollars des États-Unis), Germain Rukuki devrait être libéré prochainement. Mr Armel Niyongere, président de L'ACAT-Burundi, se réjouit de l'arrêt rendu par la cour d'Appel mais déplore cependant que l'infraction de rébellion ait été retenue à charge de l' ex- employé de l'ACAT-Burundi.English traGermain Rukuki, a Burundian human rights defender, has his 32-year prison sentence reduced to 1 year in prison. This is good news for human rights defenders around the world who have campaigned tirelessly for his release for the past four years. Convicted of inter alia endangering state security and attack on the authority of the State, Germain Rukuki works for the Association of Catholic Jurists of Burundi - AJCB and has already worked for the Action des Christians pour l'Abolition de la Torture - ACAT-Burundi, which fights for respect for human dignity in Burundi, and particularly for the abolition of torture and the death penalty. Now that his sentence has been reduced to one year in prison and a fine of 50 000 Burundian francs (approximately US $25), Rukuki is expected to be released shortly. Armel Niyongere,President of ACAT-Burundi, is delighted with the judgement.
