1017 wurde das "Heim des Botho" erstmals urkundlich erwähnt, gegründet wurde die Siedlung wohl schon um 550. Karl der Große wollte später mit Kirchenbauten ansässige Slawenstämme zum Christentum bekehren. Eine dieser 14 Slawenkirchen ist wahrscheinlich die Pfarrkirche St. Bartholomäus.
