Cadence Stock: It Beat, Raised Guidance & Set a Record Backlog — So Why We Say HOLD (CDNS Q2 2026)
from Charged Alpha Stock Encyclopedia · host Colton Thomas
Cadence Design Systems (CDNS) Q2 2026 — Cadence Design Systems (CDNS), one half of the electronic-design-automation duopoly with Synopsys, delivered another clean beat-and-raise for Q2 2026: non-GAAP EPS of $2.11 topped the ~$2.06 estimate (+28% YoY) on revenue of $1.584B (+24% YoY), with an 88% non-GAAP gross margin and 45.5% operating margin. Bookings drove a record $8.1B backlog, and growth was double-digit across every product group — Core EDA +18%, Semiconductor IP +23%, and System Design & Analysis +37% (aided by the Hexagon D&E integration). Management raised full-year guidance to $6.26-6.34B revenue (~19% growth) and $8.05-8.15 non-GAAP EPS. The stock jumped ~4% to ~$339, still ~19% below its $417 high. But at ~42x forward earnings, ~52x free cash flow and a sub-2% FCF yield — with ~$570M/yr of stock comp partly flattering the cash — even our optimistic, AI-supercycle-leaning owner-earnings DCF lands near $290. Our call: HOLD. Cadence Design Systems is one of the most quietly essential companies in all of technology — one half of the electronic-design-automation (EDA) duopoly, alongside Synopsys, whose software every chipmaker on earth uses to design and verify semiconductors. Q2 2026 was another excellent quarter: non-GAAP EPS of $2.11 beat the ~$2.06 estimate (+28% YoY), revenue rose 24% to $1.584B, non-GAAP gross margin hit 88% and operating margin 45.5%. Bookings produced a record $8.1B backlog, growth was double-digit across every product group (Core EDA +18%, Semiconductor IP +23%, System Design & Analysis +37%), and management raised full-year guidance to $6.26-6.34B revenue (~19% growth) and $8.05-8.15 non-GAAP EPS. The AI chip boom is a powerful tailwind — more, and more complex, chips to design means more Cadence software. So the debate isn't quality — it's price. The stock trades at ~42x forward earnings and over 50x free cash flow, at a sub-2% FCF yield. Part of that cash is flattered by ~$570M/yr of stock-based compensation, with roughly half of free cash flow spent on buybacks that largely just offset the dilution; China is 15% of revenue with export-control risk on top. Even leaning toward an AI-supercycle path (18% FCF growth) at a fair 9% discount rate, our owner-earnings DCF lands fair value near $290 — below the ~$339 price and well under the Street's ~$418 average target (+23%). Our call: HOLD, 3/5. An elite, wide-moat compounder with no margin of safety. Add on real weakness toward the high $200s. Not financial advice. THE CALL: HOLD (3/5, AN ELITE FRANCHISE AT A FLAWLESS-DECADE PRICE — A BEAT-AND-RAISE WITH NO MARGIN OF SAFETY) — base-case value ~$290 vs ~$339 today. What to watch: hard evidence the AI design supercycle is broadening and durable — backlog compounding beyond $8.1B, organic System Design & Analysis growth beyond the Hexagon D&E deal, and free cash flow marching higher — which would justify the premium multiple and prompt an upgrade; the risks to respect are a stumble in the AI chip build-out, an escalation in China or U.S. export controls (China is 15% of revenue), or simple multiple compression, any of which at ~42x forward earnings and a sub-2% FCF yield could re-rate the stock hard Also on YouTube: @ChargedAlpha DISCLAIMER: For informational and educational purposes only.
