CAG Stock: Conagra Just Cut Its Dividend in Half — Buy the Reset?

from Charged Alpha Stock Encyclopedia · host Colton Thomas

Conagra Brands (CAG) Q4 FY2026 — Conagra Brands (CAG) reported fiscal Q4 2026: net sales +3.6% to $2.9B (organic flat), adjusted EPS $0.47 (a penny beat), but a GAAP loss of $3.37/share from a ~$1.6B non-cash brand impairment. The big news: Conagra cut its annual dividend in half, to $0.70 from $1.40, to fund reinvestment (+$125M capex, +$40M brand) and deleverage toward 3.0x. It guided FY2027 adjusted EPS to $1.40-$1.50, below the ~$1.70 Street, with organic sales -1% to -3%. The stock (~$14.48, near its 52-week low) rose on the reset. Conagra just did something painful — it cut its dividend in half, from $1.40 to $0.70 — and the stock went up. That reaction is the whole story. CAG is cheap (~10x next year's earnings), near its 52-week low, in the same beaten-down packaged-food group as General Mills and Kraft Heinz. Alongside results it also took a ~$1.6B brand impairment and guided FY2027 below the Street (adjusted EPS $1.40-$1.50 vs ~$1.70; organic sales -1% to -3%). But the cut isn't distress — it frees cash to reinvest (+$125M capex, +$40M brand) and pay down debt toward 3.0x, and a ~12% free-cash-flow yield says a lot of bad news was already priced in. The new ~4.8% dividend is now well-covered. Our owner-earnings work lands near $15 (just above the $14.48 price) whether the business slowly declines or merely stabilizes. Our call: HOLD, 3/5 — cheap and resetting, but still shrinking. Collect the yield, watch organic sales; demand a lower price for real upside. Not financial advice. THE CALL: HOLD (3/5, CHEAP AND RESETTING, BUT STILL SHRINKING) — base-case value ~$15 vs ~$14.48 today. What to watch: organic sales declines flattening out (the single best tell that the erosion has stopped), successful deleveraging toward the 3.0x net-debt target, and evidence the snacking bright spot is offsetting frozen weakness Also on YouTube: @ChargedAlpha DISCLAIMER: For informational and educational purposes only.
