Can governments cut inflation?

The US markets are off for the Labor Day holiday. Last Friday’s US employment report did not add that much clarity to our understanding of US labor markets. The household and establishment surveys are still disagreeing over what is happening. Overall, the impression is consistent with an increase in the number of people working (or taking more than one job) in order to meet the higher cost of living.
