Can Your Religious Background Save You?

A single sentence from a child toppled an empire’s shared pretense: “The emperor has no clothes.” We start there because it mirrors what Romans 3 does to the kind of confidence that looks spiritual on the outside but cannot hold up under God’s judgment. If you’ve ever assumed that being around Christianity automatically makes you safe, this message is both sobering and strangely freeing. We walk through Romans 3:1–20 in our Guilty to Glory series and face Paul’s blunt question: if circumcision and heritage can’t save, what advantage did the Jews have and what advantage do churchgoers have today? Paul’s answer is clear: “much in every way,” chiefly the oracles of God. We talk about why having Scripture is an enormous privilege, how the Bible reveals God’s holiness and majesty, how it explains the nature and purpose of humanity, and why it tells the truth about our corruption instead of feeding our self-esteem. Then we tackle the objections Paul expects religious people to raise.
