A single sentence from a child toppled an empire’s shared pretense: “The emperor has no clothes.” We start there because it mirrors what Romans 3 does to the kind of confidence that looks spiritual on the outside but cannot hold up under God’s judgment. Religion can make you feel right while you’re actually pushing people away from God. Some of the worst tragedies and some of the weirdest moments in history share the same cover story: “We did it for religion.” We start there with a surprising modern example, then let Romans do what it always does best, strip away our excuses and show what’s really going on in the human heart. This message sits in the opening argument of the Book of Romans where Paul explains why people are guilty before God and why every person needs forgiveness, salvation, and the grace of the gospel of Jesus Christ. We trace Paul’s three portraits of guilt: the rebellious person who openly rejects God, the respectable person who feels superior because their sins look smaller, and the religious person who trusts religion itself to make them acceptable to God. Truth can be right in front of us and still get pushed down. The scariest kind of judgment is the kind you don’t see coming, because life looks fine on the surface. We open Romans 1:18 and ask the question people have asked for centuries: why do the wicked prosper, and why does God seem quiet when evil is loud? Romans doesn’t start by telling us we’re basically fine and just need a boost. It starts by telling the truth. The gospel sounded laughable in Rome: a message from a conquered people about a crucified Savior, preached to common folks and slaves while philosophers debated truth and legions projected power. Yet Paul writes one of the boldest lines in Scripture, and we slow down to feel its weight: “I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth” (Romans 1:16). We follow Paul’s mindset as he calls himself a debtor to all people and eager to bring the good news to the very center of the empire. Submission is one of those words that can instantly put your guard up and for good reason. Our culture often frames it as losing yourself, losing your voice, or giving in to pressure. One question can undo a lot of fear if you let it: does God actually know my name? Not “know about me” in a distant, cosmic way, but know me personally, see me clearly, and still want me. I take you to Psalm 139, where David describes a God who searches us, understands our thoughts, and knows our words before we speak them. Pain has a way of shrinking our world down to one question: why would God allow this? We open 1 Peter 1:6-12 and follow Peter’s steady, hope-filled logic that trials are not random, and they are not forever. God is doing something in the fire, refining genuine faith like gold so that when Jesus Christ is revealed, our lives bring him praise, honor, and glory.We also get honest about what suffering feels like. Something happened, and you can’t quite explain it.
