Canada’s Happiness Collapse
from Quiet Canines Podcast · host Michael
Canada has fallen sharply in the World Happiness Report, dropping from around 6th place a decade ago into the mid-20s today. Once considered one of the happiest countries in the world, Canada now ranks alongside the United States, reflecting a broader decline across English-speaking nations. At the same time, countries like Finland continue to lead the rankings, while others such as Costa Rica are rising. The most concerning trend is among young Canadians. While older generations have seen more stability, younger people are reporting significantly lower levels of life satisfaction. This marks a major shift from previous years when youth were the happiest demographic in the country. The report highlights social media as one contributing factor. Moderate use is associated with higher well-being, while heavy use correlates with lower life satisfaction, particularly among teenage girls. The issue is not simply the existence of these platforms, but the amount of time spent on them. There are also notable differences within Canada itself. Quebec consistently reports higher levels of happiness than many other provinces, which researchers often link to stronger social supports such as affordable childcare, lower tuition, and generous parental leave.Despite living in a safe and stable country, Canadians are becoming less happy over time. This raises an important question about what is changing beneath the surface, and why younger generations are feeling it the most. This is a public episode.
