Carl Jung - Signs of Your Purpose
from Angels Are Among Us’s Podcast · host Carl Jung
Carl Jung’s view of finding purpose is deeply psychological, spiritual, and mythic. He believed that purpose is not something you “choose,” but something that reveals itself as you become who you truly are. 🧠 1. Individuation: The Path to Your True Self Jung taught that the goal of life is individuation—the process of integrating all parts of yourself into a unified whole. Purpose is not discovered by intellect or logic, but by listening to your unconscious, especially the parts you’ve suppressed. Key idea: You don’t create your purpose; you become it. You uncover it by: facing your shadow, acknowledging your fears, reclaiming lost creativity, instinct, and desire, honoring your inner voice. Purpose is the natural outcome of self-knowledge. 🌑 2. The Shadow: The Treasure You Avoid Jung famously said: One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious. Your purpose often hides in the places you don’t want to look: childhood wounds rejected talents shame unmet needs passions you were told were “impractical” The shadow is not just darkness—it is potential. Many people never find purpose because they avoid their shadow. They pursue what is socially acceptable rather than what is internally true. 🔥 3. Synchronicity as Guidance Jung believed life speaks to us through synchronicity—meaningful coincidences. When you’re aligned with your deeper path: You meet the right teacher A book appears at the exact moment An idea or opportunity shows up “by accident” These are not luck or randomness, but psychic and outer worlds harmonizing. Synchronicity is the universe saying: “Pay attention. You’re moving toward what you were meant to become.” 🌿 4. Purpose Is Not About Achievement Jung rejected the modern idea that purpose = career, success, or identity label. For him, purpose is: living authentically, integrating opposing forces in yourself, becoming whole. You are not here to be “normal.” You are here to embody your unique pattern. He compared humans to plants: A plant grows toward the sun not because it should, but because it must. Purpose is your natural direction of growth. 🌌 5. The Calling of the Soul (Not the Ego) The ego asks: “What job should I pick?” “How can I be valuable?” “How do others see me?” The soul asks: “What is the unlived life within me?” “What part of myself wants to be born?” “Where is meaning pulling me?” Purpose, Jung said, is not about utility—it’s about meaning. Meaning makes a great many things endurable—perhaps everything. A person with purpose can endure hardship; a person without purpose becomes spiritually sick. 🌱 6. Midlife: The Turning Point Jung observed that many people find purpose after midlife, when external goals lose their appeal: Money no longer satisfies Social approval feels shallow Career accomplishments seem hollow This is the moment of the Second Birth—the soul begins its work. Midlife crisis is not a breakdown—it is a transition from ambition to meaning. 🕊️ 7. You Don’t Discover Purpose—You Are Claimed by It You don’t pick your calling; it picks you. It may come as: obsessions, dreams, symbols, emotional pain, sudden intuition, life events that shake you awake. Jungians often say: The psyche will keep knocking until you listen. Ignoring it leads to symptoms: depression anxiety addiction emptiness numbness Listening to it leads to: peace authenticity creativity inner authority connection Purpose is the path of becoming who you already are in potential. 🌟 Jung’s Purpose Philosophy in One Sentence Your purpose is the reconciliation of who you are and who you are meant to be. When your inner and outer life align, you enter a flow that feels inevitable, graceful, and deeply meaningful.
