Carol Rosenstein

from Born to Talk Radio Show · host Born to Talk Radio Show

Thank you Carol Rosenstein for joining me on the Born To Talk Radio Show Podcast. Carol is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of Music Mends Minds. Carol became very interested in the power of music as a form of acoustic art and therapy. Her husband Irwin, had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s and dementia.  However, it was through playing the piano and minimal medication that she watched him transform.  Consequently, she knew she had found her calling to help, Irwin and others. Carol is also a member of the Westwood Village Rotary Club. She will be sharing how Rotary is sharing Music Mends Minds across the globe. Music Mends Minds.   Music Mends Minds (MMM) is a global nonprofit. They bring music to the seniors of the world suffering from Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Dementia, stroke, traumatic brain injury, and PTSD. Science corroborates that music is medicine for the mind.     The 5th Dementia Revival Drum Circle Sing-Along It is important that Music Mends Minds be intergenerational, because traditional language skills fall away due to our diseases, and music becomes the language of choice for our generations to stay connected till the end of time.  You will notice that young and old come together to bring music alive. Check out their documentary!     Their Vision. To foster worldwide communities among afflicted individuals and their families, friends, volunteers, and caregivers, all of whom can thrive on socialization and music-making. How does music help us connect with others? It releases endorphins and other happy hormones Clapping & Singing together requires us to coordinate with the music and synchronize with each other Our brains search for the meaning and intent of a song which fosters empathy and understanding Making music with others builds trust It’s a tool for self-expression  Global Online Sing-A-Long Sessions Social distancing can take a toll on our mental and emotional health. This is especially true for our senior population. The ability to log on to their zoom sessions brings comfort, music, and most importantly, friendship. MMM is offering FREE online sing-a-long sessions for anyone to join along with a board-certified music therapist from Harmonic Changes who leads each session in song. They meet every Monday, Wednesday & Friday from 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM PT! To join their Zoom sessions, please CLICK HERE or on the link:  https://zoom.us/j/6378877508 Carol’s Takeaways. “The power of music changes brain chemistry, bringing pure joy and increased brain function, not only to our patients suffering but to their caregivers, families, and communities at large. Our diseases rob the patient of their identities and because music storage cells in our brains never die, they can be called on to empower our patients to remember the music/melodies of their younger years. New identities emerge as they become empowered and even remember how to play instruments they played before, by dusting them off and restoring the rhythm of life. Our programs are fun, free, and therapeutic!” In Closing. So then, as you think about what music means to you, maybe it will bring up memories from years ago.  For instance, isn’t interesting when you can remember the melody and lyrics from your childhood?  Or, maybe you recall how you danced to the music.  Therefore, this podcast reflects on the value of music and how we share it with others.
