Celestica Stock: Beat, Raised Guidance & CCS +84% on AI — So Why We Say HOLD (CLS Q2 2026)

from Charged Alpha Stock Encyclopedia · host Colton Thomas

Celestica Inc. (CLS) Q2 2026 — Celestica (CLS), the electronics-manufacturing-services (EMS) firm that has become the quiet backbone of the AI data center, delivered another clean beat-and-raise for Q2 2026: adjusted (non-GAAP) EPS of $2.54 topped the ~$2.30 estimate (+83% YoY) on revenue of $4.70B (+62% YoY), with a record 8.2% adjusted operating margin. GAAP EPS was $3.17 (flattered by a one-time total-return-swap gain). The AI engine is the CCS segment — connectivity & cloud — up 84% to $3.81B (~81% of revenue), including ~$1.9B of higher-value HPS (Hardware Platform Solutions), up 58%; the steadier ATS segment rose 8% to $0.89B. Management raised FY2026 guidance again to $20.5B revenue (+65%), $11.30 adjusted EPS (+87%), 8.4% adjusted operating margin and ~$600M free cash flow, and guided Q3 to $5.25-5.55B / $2.88-3.08 adjusted EPS. The stock popped ~5% to ~$320, still ~33% below its $474 high. But it's a structurally low-margin (~12% gross, ~8% operating) contract manufacturer re-rated to ~28x forward earnings and a ~1.5% free-cash-flow yield — with free cash flow roughly flat while earnings triple, as the AI capex + working-capital ramp eats cash. Even our AI-supercycle-leaning, normalized owner-earnings DCF lands near $275. Our call: HOLD, 2/5. Celestica is the quiet backbone of the AI data center — an electronics-manufacturing-services (EMS) firm, a contract manufacturer that designs and builds the networking switches, servers and storage hyperscalers rack up by the thousand. Q2 2026 was another excellent quarter: adjusted (non-GAAP) EPS of $2.54 beat the ~$2.30 estimate (+83% YoY), revenue rose 62% to $4.70B, and adjusted operating margin hit a record 8.2% (GAAP EPS was $3.17, flattered by a one-time swap gain). The AI engine is the CCS segment, up 84% to $3.81B (~81% of revenue), including ~$1.9B of own-designed HPS hardware platforms (+58%); the steadier ATS segment grew 8% to $0.89B. Management raised full-year guidance again to $20.5B revenue (~65% growth) and $11.30 adjusted EPS (+87%), at an 8.4% operating margin and ~$600M free cash flow, and said 2027 growth will accelerate beyond 65%. The AI-networking build-out is a powerful, real tailwind. So the debate isn't the quarter — it's the price and the business type. This is a structurally low-margin contract manufacturer (~12% gross margin, which actually fell year-over-year; ~8% operating margin) that has been re-rated to ~28x forward earnings and a ~1.5% free-cash-flow yield. And the cash is the tell: free cash flow is guided to just ~$600M — roughly flat with last year — even as earnings triple, because the AI capex ramp (up ~7x) and a $1B-plus working-capital build are consuming the cash. Add heavy hyperscaler customer concentration, and the risks are real. Even leaning toward the AI-supercycle path at a fair 9% discount rate, our normalized owner-earnings DCF lands fair value near $275 — below the ~$320 price and far below the Street's ~$448 average target (+40%). Our call: HOLD, 2/5. An essential, superbly-run AI-hardware builder with no margin of safety. Add on real weakness toward the low $200s. Not financial advice. THE CALL: HOLD (2/5, A LOW-MARGIN EMS PRICED FOR AN AI SUPERCYCLE — A BEAT-AND-RAISE WITH NO MARGIN OF SAFETY) — base-case value ~$275 vs ~$320 today. What to watch: hard evidence the cash is becoming real — free cash flow catching up to earnings as the AI capex ramp matures, HPS lifting gross margins durably, and the customer base broadening beyond a handful of hyperscalers — which would justify the premium multiple and prompt an upgrade; the risks to respect are a hyperscaler pausing or in-sourcing, an AI-capex digestion, gross margins slipping further (they already fell YoY to 12.3%), or simple multiple compression, any of which at ~28x forward earnings on a ~1.5% free-cash-flow yield for an 8%-operating-margin contract manufacturer could re-rate the stock hard Also on YouTube: @ChargedAlpha DISCLAIMER: For informational and educational purposes only.
