CEO Jonathan Marren: Beyond Lithium, Solving Wind Energy Storage

Ever since Kathryn Porter appeared on the podcast, a storm has erupted in the British media, relentlessly tearing into wind energy and branding its storage as hopelessly inefficient. Today we have the CEO of Invinity, Jonathan Marren, who is Britain's largest liquid flow battery producer, who gives the solution. Why isn’t lithium-ion enough for a grid powered by wind and solar? In this week's episode, Jonathan explains how vanadium flow batteries and long-duration energy storage can reshape the electricity system.Jonathan sits down with our host, Alex Wolfe, to explore the fundamental differences between lithium-ion and flow batteries, what Invinity set out to solve and what global deployments across 17 countries reveal about how long-duration storage is actually used. They also discuss falling battery costs, lessons from China, manufacturing breakthroughs and the policy and investment changes needed to unlock grid-scale storage.Jonathan Marren is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Invinity Energy Systems, a leading developer of vanadium flow batteries for long-duration energy storage, having stepped into the permanent role in September 2024 after serving as CFO/Chief Development Officer (CDO). With over 20 years in energy finance and strategy, Jonathan brings extensive experience from roles at Singer Capital Markets and Peel Hunt, focusing on corporate finance and M&A for energy and cleantech firms before leading Invinity. LAST REMAINING TICKETS: 'The Wolfe List Launch: Night Before International Energy Week!' is coming Monday 9th February (this will be the best investment of an evening!)Get your tickets here - the big energy careers event 🎟️https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-wolfe-list-launch-night-before-international-energy-week-tickets-1977364549597?aff=oddtdtcreatorDiscount: WPC50 (50% OFF!)#LongDurationEnergyStorage #FlowBatteries #EnergyStorageSeason Two is in Partnership with The SpectatorTickets for the upcoming The Spectator Energy Summit, on Monday 30th November 2026, are available on sale.
