ONS 2026: Norway’s Energy Dilemma on Arctic, Russia and EU

This week, as the Energy World meets in Norway for ONS every two years, Norway says it plans to keep developing oil and gas resources in the Arctic regardless of the European Union’s position on new drilling. Energy Minister Terje Aasland argues that continued activity in the Barents Sea is important not only for Norway’s economy, but also for European energy security. We unpack the growing tension between energy security and climate policy as Norway doubles down on Arctic oil and gas exploration.Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 reshaped Europe’s energy landscape, Norway has become Europe’s largest natural-gas supplier, providing roughly 30% of gas demand across the EU and Britain. But Norwegian production is expected to decline significantly after 2030 unless new resources are discovered and developed. That puts the Barents Sea at the centre of a much bigger debate: Can Europe reduce its dependence on fossil fuels while simultaneously relying on Norway to keep its energy system secure?Norway’s position highlights a contradiction at the heart of European energy policy. Europe wants to accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels, but the geopolitical upheaval following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has also increased the strategic importance of reliable energy suppliers such as Norway. The result is a debate that goes far beyond a handful of Arctic drilling projects: How much new fossil-fuel infrastructure should Europe support today to guarantee energy security tomorrow and how does it avoid locking itself into assets it may no longer need?About The HostHost Alex Wolfe has over 20 years of experience in the energy industry, including previously serving as Commercial Director at Certas Energy and Director of the South, with responsibility for 900 fuel HGVs. World Energy by the Numbers: Big Questions with Energy Institute CEO Dr Nick Wayth

The 75th edition of the Statistical Review of World Energy, published by the Energy Institute, isn’t just another report. It’s one of the key benchmarks for understanding how the global energy system is actually evolving. In this episode, Energy Institute CEO Dr Nick Wayth joins host Alex Wolfe to unpack what the data is really showing beneath the headlines. The picture isn’t a simple shift to renewables. Solar and wind are growing quickly, and low-carbon power is now meeting all new electricity demand. But overall energy demand is still rising, driven by AI, data centres, cooling, aviation and broader global growth. That’s where the tension lies. Energy security is back at the top of the agenda and different regions are taking very different paths including: China’s rapid electrification, US gas and data center expansion and Europe’s grid constraints. The real question now isn’t just what we build, but whether we can build fast enough to keep up.GIVEAWAY!To celebrate our 100th episode, we're giving away a 45-47 MAGA hat! The Truth About UK Fuel Prices: Who Really Profits?

In this episode of Wolfe Power Club, Alex Wolfe is joined by Managing Director, Tom Highland (Highland Group), and Commercial Director, Sarah Kind (Edge Petrol), to uncover the truth behind fuel prices as the UK enters week six of disruption following the Iran conflict. With diesel prices up by as much as 40-50p per litre in just weeks, politicians have accused retailers of profiteering, but this episode challenges that narrative using real data from over 1,000 UK forecourts. We break down what’s really happening at the pump: shrinking retailer margins, rising wholesale costs and the reality that most of the price you pay is driven by tax and global markets, not forecourt profits. The episode also busts the biggest myths, including the idea that petrol stations are sitting on weeks of cheap fuel, and explains why independents often look more expensive than supermarkets during volatile periods. From panic buying and supply concerns to the growing gap between petrol and diesel, this is a clear, no-nonsense look at one of the biggest cost-of-living issues in the UK today.Tom Highland is the Managing Director of Highland Group. A family-run fuel retail business for over 45 years with 6 sites across Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Suffolk. He has taken a leadership role in running the sites for 10 years. Winner of several Forecourt Trader awards, including the Special Recognition award in 2024. First to trial Co-op's new & Co-op fascia offer. The business currently has 5 sites with BP and 1 with Esso, and previously with Shell. Tom runs a TikTok account to show what it's like to run a petrol station from under the @thepetrolretailer channel.Sarah Kind is Commercial Director at EdgePetrol, a fuel pricing and analytics platform supporting around 1,000 independent forecourts. She joined in 2018 to build the Customer Success function when the business was in its early stages, and has since moved into a commercial leadership role. Sarah works closely with retailers to help them navigate fuel pricing, improve performance, and stay competitive in a fast-changing market. Kemi Badenoch: Scrap the Energy Tax Rises

In this episode of Wolfe Power Club, host Alex Wolfe speaks to Kemi Badenoch, Leader of the Conservative Party and His Majesty's Official Opposition, as we enter week 5 of the energy crisis resulting from the Iran War.The current government has not followed other European powers in either supporting their energy industry or reducing pump prices. We hear from Kemi what she would do, if she were Prime Minister, for the North Sea oil industry and the general public. As we go to press, diesel prices in Britain have gone from £1.40 per litre to £1.80 in the space of 5 weeks, meaning for the average truck driver that is £75 more per fuelling. The second part that Ed Miliband, Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves are not addressing is that, as the government, they are receiving 8 pence per litre more in VAT but are not changing fiscal policy. Alex discusses with Kemi how to stop taxes on the working. From North Sea oil and gas to rising fuel prices, she argues the UK should prioritise domestic energy production over imports, warning that current policies risk jobs, investment and long-term energy security. She also challenges the environmental case for importing fuel and calls for changes to fuel duty and energy taxation. With energy bills, inflation and economic growth at stake, this is a direct look at one of the biggest political debates in the UK today versus our European neighbours._____________________________________________________________Music from #Uppbeathttps://uppbeat.io/t/tatami/residenceLicense code: JI1XYNLQRBRLWN12Kemi Badenoch has been the Member of Parliament for North West Essex since 2017 and was re-elected in July 2024. Andrew also shares what customers are really saying about range, charging costs and infrastructure as the UK falls short of its ZEV targets.Fleet Evolution website: https://fleetevolution.com/Mark Rober - Can You Fool A Self Driving Car (YouTube) clip: https://youtu.be/IQJL3htsDyQ?si=KiOLuas8oex38jgPAndrew Leech has been around the fleet and employee benefits industry for over 26 years, from a career switch from finance to IT solution. For fleet, Andrew has transitioned to employee benefits and HR software and then an employee benefit centred around electric cars via a payroll deduction introducing EVs to SME’s who previously couldn’t offer salary sacrifice cars. Andrew's interest in electric cars is driven by personal experience, firstly as an asthmatic who realised when he moved to the countryside the improvement clean air can have on everyone's life; and then secondly as a former ‘petrol head’ who realised the experience that EVs offered. A regular speaker on the university circuit Andrew is an advocate of EVs, not because of the environmental benefits specifically, but moreso because of the performance and convenience.#ElectricVehiclesUK, #EnergyTransition, #FleetManagementSeason Two is in Partnership with The SpectatorTickets for the upcoming The Spectator Energy Summit, on Monday 30th November 2026, are available on sale. Alternative Budget Special with The Spectator's Michael Simmons: Inside Westminster’s Energy Storm

Today, we’re joined by one of Britain’s leading economic commentators: The Spectator’s economics editor, Michael Simmons. Together, we explore an alternative budget for the energy industry and why it’s not too late for the Government to adopt some of our proposals. We examine OEUK’s suggested replacement for the Energy Profits Levy and discuss why the GMB union views lower taxation as a means to safeguard jobs. We also pay tribute to the late Quentin Willson, who, beyond his well-known Top Gear career, championed the FairFuelUK campaign, a movement credited with preventing fuel duty hikes at the pump for nearly two decades. We then turn to the question of VAT on electricity and gas, before concluding with fellow Spectator writer Rory Sutherland’s ideas on how to make tax more aspirational.Join us and Michael Gove for The Spectator Energy Summit.
