La Ciencia también estudia las consecuencias del maltrato infantil en la vida adulta. Se ha comprobado que los efectos del estrés en niños son más graves si es causado por un comportamiento maltratador por parte de quienes deben ocuparse del cuidado de los niños. Para estudiar estos efectos, un grupo de investigadores de varias universidades estadounidenses y canadienses sometieron a un grupo de ratas de laboratorio de solo 8 días de edad a la presencia de una madre adoptiva maltratadora. Cuando las ratas alcanzaron los 13 días de edad, comprobaron que habían desarrollado problemas de integración social asociados a anomalías en dos regiones del cerebro, la amígdala y el hipocampo, las cuales ya habían sido identificadas en otros estudios como probables blancos de la acción del estrés. La amígdala es una región cerebral involucrada en la gestión de ciertas emociones, como el miedo y la ansiedad, mientras que el hipocampo es una región involucrada en la memoria.
